I wanted to stay in Tucson close to all my friends and family so this community was a good fit for me. It's basic but nice for my needs. The homes here are very unique in architecture and are low-maintenance which was exactly what I wanted. I also work part-time at the University of AZ which is pretty close by so that is also a nice convenience.
Casitas de Castilian was designed by architect "Benny" Gonzales, one of the first graduates from the ASU school of architecture. (See Wikipedia) He was ahead of his time with a neighborhood concept of grouped, mixed value casitas with shared open space. Convenient location, European village ambiance, shade, quiet, and potential upside value are big pluses.
Unfortunately, some homes need major remodeling and updating for energy conservation and seniors' convenience and safety.
The community well and water system is a mixed blessing. The whole SW US is struggling with drought so it is a surprise to see acres of bermuda grass, but the huge trees are delightful. The water table is dropping throughout the Tucson valley so changes or expenses can be anticipated. (I am a frequent visitor and have previewed several homes.)
