Laguna Woods Village in Orange County, California is the largest 55+ active adult community on the West Coast. Formerly known as Leisure World, this 12,736-home community boasts seven clubhouses, 36-holes of golf, five swimming pools, an equestrian center and over 250 clubs and organizations.
Laguna Woods Village, California is situated on 2,100 acres of rolling hillsides in the beautiful Saddleback Valley of Orange County. It is only 10 minutes to the beach and Pacific Ocean, and surrounded by many of southern California’s most popular attractions. Laguna Woods Village is a guard gated community with 24-hour patrols and a private bus system.
Construction of what was originally known as Leisure World began in 1963 by Ross Cortese, and the community was completed in 1986. It was unincorporated until 1999 when it became part of the City of Laguna Woods, CA. In 2005, the name of the active adult community was changed from Leisure World to Laguna Woods Village to avoid copyright disagreements with the estate of Ross Cortese over the use of the Leisure World name. The 18,000 residents of Laguna Woods Village now account for 90 percent of the City of Laguna Woods population.
Laguna Woods Village consists of three housing corporations governed by three separate boards of directors. Homebuyers can select from single family homes, high-rise condominiums, attached single level condos and carefree co-ops. All prospective buyers are required to meet certain financial requirements as a condition of membership into any of the three housing corporations in Laguna Woods Village, CA.
