The Atlanta metropolitan area spans 28 counties and includes numerous suburbs such as Marietta, Sandy Springs and Roswell. The region is home to over 5 million people and has experienced unprecedented growth in the last decade. Since 2000, the area has experienced more than 20 percent population growth, making it the fastest growing city in the country. The Atlanta area has attracted retirees in recent years because it offers the conveniences of a large city and it is a major cultural and entertainment hub. The citys warm weather climate is ideal for many retirees from northern states who want to live in a mild climate while still getting a taste of the four seasons. As a result, the Atlanta area has provided a great retirement community for out-of-state people as well as native Georgians who want to stay close to home, friends and family.
To keep pace with the growing number of Baby Boomers and retirees moving to the area, a number of age-restricted active adult communities and active retirement communities have sprung up around Atlanta in recent years. Most of the active retirement communities in Atlanta are being constructed in the suburban regions surrounding the city. Most of the Atlanta active adult communities are within an hour drive of downtown and many are located on the citys north side. However, more affordable retirement communities are available further from the city. Del Webb, for example, has three active adult communities in Atlanta metro. Sun City Peachtree, The Village at Deaton Creak and Del Webb at Lake Oconee offer three distinctive active lifestyle communities in the Atlanta area. Sun City Peachtree offers the largest active adult development in the area and includes an 18-hole golf course and many other great amenities. The Village at Deaton Creek offers a more intimate community and Del Webb at Lake Oconee provides the only Del Webb community in the country with direct lake access. In addition to the Del Webb communities, there are several other great active adult communities and active retirement communities surrounding Atlanta.
The Atlanta area has a humid, subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are consistently hot and humid, with July nights averaging 71 degrees and afternoons averaging 89. January lows are normally in the low 30s and highs average near 52 degrees. Snow is uncommon, but an occasional dusting has been known to happen once or twice a year. The area experiences around 50 inches of rain annually.
With over 5 million people in the area, residents are never far from recreational destinations and culture. Atlanta hosts a variety of museums, theaters and art galleries. The Georgia Aquarium located in Atlanta is the worlds largest aquarium. In addition, there are numerous parks that host festivals and cultural events, a botanical garden and zoo. The Blue Ridge Mountains are approximately an hour north of the city and provide a variety of outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, camping and biking. Atlanta is also home to four professional sports teams in baseball, football, hockey and basketball.
The Atlanta area is home to over two dozen institutions of higher education including the Georgia Tech, Georgia State University and a variety of community colleges. Special programs are available to active adults who want to engage in lifelong learning and continuing education. Work is readily available for the 55+ crowd who are not ready for retirement. The region has an abundance of both part-time and full-time job opportunities available.
