Florida’s Treasure Coast is named for the Spanish Treasure Fleet, a collection of 12 ships that were sailing from the New World back to Spain in the summer of 1715. A hurricane swept through and destroyed 11 of those ships. The storm struck the fleet right off the coast of Vero Beach.
Today, the area is a pleasant collection of quiet beaches and natural state parks and preserves. Active adults enjoy the various recreational activities, the warm climate, and the collection of affordable places to live. The Treasure Coast runs along the Atlantic Ocean and includes the Indian River, St. Lucie County, and Martin County.
