Allentown allows for a quaint retirement with modern conveniences and is close to several big cities

Billy Joel composed a great song about it but there is much more to Allentown than what he wrote about. Located in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, this town is Lehigh County’s county seat and offers easy access to both Philadelphia and New York City. Allentown is a historical treasure with charming homes and buildings throughout. It is also made up of different districts, like Seventh Street, with its dining and shopping, and the West End, where theater and an art walk can be found. Nature lovers can head to the Blue Mountains and South Mountain for hiking, skiing, and other outdoor pursuits.

The cost of living here is low compared to other U.S. metropolitan areas of the same size, and temperatures tend to be cooler, with summer highs averaging around 71 degrees. Residents ages 45-64 make up 28 percent of the population, and those 65 and up comprise about 16.7 percent. Still, this city is appealing to all ages though and presents many opportunities for rewarding, active lifestyles. Here are some of the top 55+ communities in the Allentown area.
