A blue sky over a row of attached homed at Villas At Seminary Hill in Carmel, New York

Active adults looking to retire in the Carmel region of New York have a number of excellent communities to consider.

The Carmel region of New York holds the key to any adventurer’s heart. This part of the state (also known as the Hudson Valley) spans 150 miles from Westchester County up to Albany, and it's known for its magnificent scenery, farmers markets, wineries, historic landmarks, and cultural attractions. It was actually designated as a National Heritage Area by Congress in 1996, and it includes 10 counties.

Living in the Hudson Valley means you can drive into New York City whenever you feel like it and head back home that same day. Other benefits of living in this region include less traffic and much more scenic beauty; it's home to the Catskill Mountains, the charming Tarrytown, and the Ashokan Reservoir Promenade.

Medical care and cost of living are two important concerns, and top-performing hospitals here include New York-Presbyterian Hudson Valley and Westchester Medical Center. The State of New York also boasts retirement-friendly taxes, with no tax on Social Security, state or local pensions, and civil service or military pensions. Those ages 59 and up can also get up to $20,000 of qualified pensions excluded.

To give you a better idea about Carmel real estate, we have curated a list of four outstanding active adult communities in this area. They should provide a good snapshot of what you can get in your price range, and if you need to look further, there are 16 more to look at.
