Kern City is an established 55+ active adult community in Bakersfield, California. It was opened by Del Webb in 1961 after the developer finished work on Sun City, Arizona — which was itself the first community of its kind in the nation. Both properties share many of Del Webb’s signature features, though Kern City is the smaller of the two.

Home-Styles at Kern City

Kern City home styles are available on a resale basis only as both single-family and attached units. Single-family residences feature up to three bedrooms and two bathrooms plus an attached garage, and range from 948 to 2,056 square feet.

Low-maintenance, interior features include laminate wood floors, and houses also come with private patio space and fairway views. Attached floor plans are 1,079 to 1963 square feet with two bedrooms, one-and-a-half baths, and attached garages. Homebuyers will find desirable features like plantation shutters and Corian countertops, as well as low-maintenance exteriors.

The Town Hall, a clubhouse at the center of the neighborhood, provides multipurpose and meeting rooms for club events. Residents work on arts and crafts projects, sewing and wood carving, meet for billiards, or card games. A lending library is also on site, along with a business center and computers, to help homeowners stay productive.

To keep in shape, residents can make use of an exercise room with equipment. An outdoor pool features two spas and a large patio and beckons residents for an afternoon in the Central California sunshine.

This is an active and close-knit community that supports and encourages social gatherings and events. People get together for karaoke and movie nights, dances, and pot luck dinners. There’s something for everyone, from a military veterans’ group to exercise and quilting clubs.

Although it’s not part of the property, community members have access, with a separate membership fee, to the Sundale Country Club. The club is within walking distance of Kern City and is well-known for its 18-hole championship-level golf course. Members say that no two holes are alike and there are plenty of challenges to keep things interesting.  The semi-private club hosts corporate events throughout the year along with the annual Bakersfield City Championship.

 Local Attractions

Bakersfield is a short drive from Kern City and about 110 miles north of Los Angeles. It’s the ninth largest city in the state and the county seat of Kern County, which is the third largest in the United States for agriculture production.

As such, Bakersfield is also a foodie town and boasts the highest number of Basque restaurants in the nation. In addition to wonderful eateries, the city is the birthplace of a country music genre called the Bakersfield Sound. Merle Haggard and Buck Owens are two nationally known artists in this genre.

Bakersfield is home to several music venues, along with museums, places to go for entertainment like bowling and movies as well. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate proximity to state and national parks, including the Sequoia National Forest.

Active adults aged 55 and better who are looking for an established community in the heart of sunny Central California will appreciate Kern City’s amenities, the neighboring golf club, and all of the attractions in nearby Bakersfield.
