About 40 minutes southwest of downtown Chicago, Lago Vista is a scenic retreat for empty nesters, retirees and other 55+ active adults. Lakes, ponds and miles of nature trails lend a rural feel to this gated suburban community that's still within reach of the Windy City and its rich tapestry of neighborhoods, culture, food and festivals.
Closer to home, residents can take advantage of championship golf courses, historical landmarks which include the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, and a family-friendly pumpkin farm, which is an ideal place to take the grandkids, especially around Halloween.
At the heart of Lago Vista is a 21,000 square-foot clubhouse that overlooks the water and welcomes guests with a fireplace and player piano in the main lobby. Homeowners are invited to relax and unwind in a sports lounge with billiards or at the card tables, or watch the big game on a large-screen TV. An on-site salon offers massage therapy and spa services.
A fitness center houses an indoor pool and aerobics area where residents can work out on their own or join a class. Other indoor facilities include a Ping Pong room, arts and crafts studio, meeting rooms, computers and a library. A banquet hall is available for community socials and weekly movie nights.
During the summer months, Lago Vista is a biking and hiking haven with miles of trails that meander throughout the community. An outdoor swimming pool, picnic area and bocce ball and horseshoe courts give homeowners other ways to enjoy the summer sun and stay active and social. And with so much to see and do, a full-time activities director is on hand to coordinate club and community events.
Developer Hartz Homes started construction on Lago Vista in 2004. When the property is complete, it will contain nearly 832 single-family residences and townhomes. Single-family homes are single-level and range from 1,500 to 2,196 square feet. A choice of five floor plans includes sun rooms, dens and optional basements. Attached homes are available in groups of three or more with a choice of three floor plans and 1,300 to 1,550 square feet of living space.
Monthly homeowners' association dues cover full access to amenities, lawn care and landscaping, and snow removal. The cost is slightly higher for attached properties because of a roof fund, lawn watering and driveway maintenance.
The surrounding northern Illinois region offers an almost endless array of attractions. A new I-355 extension provides easy access to downtown Chicago, where residents can cheer on one of several hometown sports teams, dine in an eclectic restaurant scene, visit Millennium Park or Navy Pier, go shopping, take in a museum and much more. In nearby Homer Glen, Bengtson's Pumpkin Farm features a full schedule of activities for the grandkids with kiddie rides, a haunted barn, petting zoo and large selection of pumpkins.
For active adults who want a rural setting near the big city — as well as a place to simplify, downsize and have free time to pursue favorite interests — Lago Vista's quiet ambiance and active lifestyle amenities are sure to please.
