Low $300s - High $400s
This must-see retirement community is perfect for downsizing with attached homes on a gated property in Suffolk County. Built from 2003 to 2005, Sunken Pond Estates has 194 resale attached homes offered in three floor plans. These plans range from 1,344 to 1,656 square feet with two bedrooms, two or two-and-a-half baths, one-car garages, and options like cathedral ceilings and full basements.
Sunken Pond Estates is close to two golf courses, The Woods at Cherry Creek and Sandy Pond. Its community clubhouse has the exercise room and aerobics studio plus a catering kitchen, lounge area, and media room. There’s also an outdoor pool, bocce ball court, and a putting green on the grounds.
Long Island’s North Shore is only about five miles from this appealing community, so getting to the beach is a piece of cake. Head a few minutes south and you will run into the Peconic Bay Medical Center and several shopping centers with a CVS, banks, restaurants, Target, and coffee shops. There is also a Hampton Jitney stop in town, which goes to and from New York City.
Below $100k - High $200s
Glenwood Village is three miles from Sunken Pond Estates and has a different atmosphere with 588 new and resale single-family homes. This affordably priced 55+ community opened in 1959, but it has a new section called Glenwood Oaks that has 88 homes with two or three bedrooms and two baths. The original Glenwood Village section has models with two bedrooms and one to two baths, and all have either driveway parking or carports. Some also have porches, dens, and morning rooms.
You’ll find the aerobics studio in Glenwood’s recreation center, which also has an exercise room, a crafts studio, a catering kitchen, and a library. Outdoor amenities include a putting green, a swimming pool, and bocce ball courts. Popular community activities include fundraisers, the Glenwood Village Lassies, and group trips. Local points of interest include the Tanger Outlets Riverhead, Peconic Bog County Park, and Splish Splash Water Park, perfect for visiting grandkids.
High $400s - Low $1Ms
Moving west into Nassau County, we find Meadowbrook Pointe Athletic Club & Spa, an upscale 55+ community with 720 resale condo and attached homes. It was completed in 2016 and has 10 condo and four townhome floor plans. The condos range from 970 to 2,054 square feet with one to two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The spacious townhomes range from 2,845 to 3,359 square feet with two bedrooms and two to two-and-a-half bathrooms. Residents can expect to find upgrades like oak floors, custom built-ins, and gourmet kitchens in some of these exclusive homes.
Meadowbrook’s modern clubhouse has resort-style amenities, including its fitness center and aerobics studio, indoor pool, spa, café, and golf simulator. There’s also a business center, a ballroom, and tennis and bocce ball courts.
This gated community is closer to Manhattan, so without traffic, it might take under an hour to get there. Closer to home, you’ll find Eisenhower Park, Old Westbury Gardens, and Jones Beach State Park. Nearby shops and services include Costco, Walmart, Lowe’s, and Nassau University Medical Center.
Low $500s - High $600s
Completed in 2007 in Suffolk County, Encore at Lake Grove is a retirement community with 228 resale attached homes and one of the most refined clubhouses on Long Island. Developed by WCI homes, it offers four models ranging from 1,400 to 2,189 square feet with two bedrooms, two to two-and-a-half baths, and attached one- or two-car garages. Extras include patios, lofts, and well-appointed master suites.
The impressive clubhouse has a state-of-the-art fitness center complete with an aerobics room, locker rooms, massage room, and an indoor lap pool plus a sauna and steam rooms. Additional perks include a catering kitchen, a grand ballroom, and a business center. During the warmer months, you’ll see homeowners outside enjoying the putting green, bocce ball and tennis courts, walking trails, Tiki bar, and sparkling outdoor pool.
There are two shopping centers right outside the gates with grocery stores, a Petco, a movie theater, and plenty of shops. Some of the closest (and best) beaches are in the Hamptons and Fire Island.
