If you’re seeking both an attached home and an Arizona retirement, then there are numerous Southern Arizona communities offering attached homes. They range from large communities of a few thousand homes down to more intimate communities of just a few dozen homes. They include communities in an urban setting or communities with a desert setting, giving easier access to hiking and other outdoor recreation.
Why choose an attached home?
There seems to be an obvious risk of increased neighbor noise, yet some homes are only semi-attached, or only have attached garages, so don’t rule them out solely on that basis. Attached homes tend to be smaller and, therefore, require less upkeep. They also tend to be less expensive, so if you’re on a budget you might find a nicer home than a detached home at a similar price. Attached homes also frequently have no yard or only a small yard. To some, this is a drawback, but it’s a distinct advantage if you don’t like yard work or find it physically difficult to do.
Here’s a small selection of some of the Southern Arizona communities offering attached homes.
Saddlebrooke – Tucson, AZ
Saddlebrooke is the largest of the Southern Arizona communities offering attached homes. There are 4,589 single-family and attached homes in this community for the 40+ active adult. It’s a good choice if you’re younger and not yet ready for full retirement to Arizona but you want an affordable home for regular vacations with no yard to maintain when you’re not there. It can also give you a taste of what full-time retirement to Arizona would be like.
Saddlebrooke is a 40-minute drive due north of Downtown Tucson. It’s overlooked by the Santa Catalina Mountains, which are only a short drive away, providing easy access to plenty of outdoor recreational activities.
As a large community, Saddlebrooke has many amenities of its own. These include two golf clubs, each with an 18-hole course, a pro shop, and a driving range. One also has a putting area, and both have mountain views. Other sporting facilities include tennis, volleyball, softball, basketball, and badminton. There are also two fitness centers, three outdoor pools, a 478-seat performing arts theater, and rooms for crafts, yoga, dance, and aerobics.
Their attached villas start at 1,452 square feet, providing one bedroom, a den, two bathrooms, and an attached two-car garage. The largest attached homes in this Southern Arizona community have 2,165 square feet with two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, and an attached two-car garage. Attached homes are for sale in the mid to high $200s.
Quail Creek – Green Valley, AZ
Quail Creek is a gated community of 4,000 attached and single-family homes for the 40+ active adult. It’s in Green Valley, a town of about 25,000 people which is a 30-minute drive south of Tucson. Quail Creek is on the eastern edge of town, a 10-minute drive from several shopping malls.
A major attraction among Quail Creek’s many amenities is its golf club, which provides 27 holes through a combination of three 9-hole courses. There’s a grill and a bar there too. Quail Creek also has the Anza Athletic Club, which provides a fitness center, tennis courts, bocce courts, an indoor whirlpool spa, two pools, and studios for dance, aerobics, and yoga. Arts and crafts enthusiasts are catered for by the Creative Arts and Technology Center, which has rooms for woodworking, ceramics, quilting/needlework, jewelry, and other crafts.
The smallest attached homes offer 1,286 square feet with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a two-car garage. There are five models for the attached villas, the largest being 1,508 square feet. These have two bedrooms, a den, two bathrooms, and a two-car garage. Prices for homes in Quail Creek generally start in the high $100s, but there are fewer attached homes available, so it’s important to register your interest with a realtor for when attached homes come on the market.
Sun City Oro Valley – Oro Valley, AZ
Sun City Oro Valley is a Del Webb community of 2,488 attached and single-family homes for the 45+ active adult. It’s a 30-minute drive due north of downtown Tucson and only five minutes from Catalina State Park, which covers 5,500 acres of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
Amenities here include an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, and two outdoor pools. The Artisan Center provides studios for stained glass, ceramics, sewing, lapidary, woodworking, and silversmithing. Residents also enjoy a fitness center, an auditorium, mini golf, eight tennis courts, and courts for racquetball, bocce, and pickleball.
Attached homes range from 1,000 to 1,400 square feet, and all have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an attached one-car garage. Prices range from the high $100s to the low $200s.
La Cholla Hills – Tucson, AZ
If you require either a very large or a very small attached home, then you might want to consider La Cholla Hills. This is a smaller community of 389 attached and single-family homes for the 55+ active adult. It’s in a more urban setting, a 20-minute drive north of downtown Tucson, but at the same time only a 15-minute drive from the entrance to Pima Canyon, which takes you into the Santa Catalina Mountains.
There are naturally fewer amenities than in larger communities, but residents still enjoy a clubhouse, two heated outdoor pools and spas, three tennis courts, three shuffleboard courts, and courts for bocce and pickleball. The Tucson National Golf Course, which has two 18-hole courses, is less than a ten-minute drive away.
The attached homes at La Cholla Hills cover a wide range of sizes. They start at 700 square feet and go to 2,000 square feet with one, two, or three bedrooms. Prices start in the high $100s, but being a smaller community, there are not always homes available, so it’s important to register if you’re looking for an attached home in this Southern Arizona community.
