Del Webb began building the active adult community of Sun City West in 1978. By the time the project was completed in 1997, the robust community contained 16,900 homes. Located less than three miles from the first 55+ community in the nation, Del Webb's Sun City, and 20 miles from downtown Phoenix, Sun City West features single-family and town homes with diverse floor plans for the needs of all active adults.
Many of the homes built in the early years of Sun City West have been remodeled with contemporary floor plans and fixtures. Buyers in Sun City West find it to be an ideal community because of the affordability of the houses, the wide variety of amenities, and the sunny location. Most of Sun City West is in an unincorporated area, so residents benefit from low property taxes.
The list of Sun City West activities that residents enjoy year-round is impressive. Active adults have access to nine golf courses, two mini-golf courses, 27 tennis courts, and numerous racquetball, pickleball, bocce ball, and shuffleboard courts. Residents can take it easy in one of the indoor or outdoor pools, or they can take a brisk walk on one of the four indoor and outdoor walking tracks. In addition, the community has a softball field and volleyball and basketball courts.
Four clubhouses offer nine restaurants, four fitness centers with high-end equipment, card rooms, ceramics studios, arts and crafts studios, a computer lab, billiard room, meeting rooms, metal and woodworking shops, and aerobics studios. There are two ballrooms, a 30-lane bowling alley, 300-person theater, and a 7,000-seat concert hall. With over 100 activity groups, all residents can find physical and social activities to engage in no matter the season.
Within the community, residents can ride golf carts to supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, restaurants, post offices, and the Del E. Webb Hospital. A short distance away, residents have easy access to the Arrowhead Mall, Challenger Space Center, West Valley Art Museum, Wildlife World Zoo, Arizona State University West, and Lake Pleasant.
Nearby Phoenix provides big-city entertainment and hosts major sports teams in football, baseball, and basketball. The city is the spring training home of several major league baseball teams. Within the city are the Desert Botanical Garden, Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
Located in the breathtaking Sonoran Desert, the area surrounding Sun City West has a view and lifestyle sure to provide active adults with almost as much to do as the community itself.
