Lebanon is a peaceful county in Central Pennsylvania, situated within equal distances (30 miles or so) of Harrisburg, Reading, and Lancaster. Its county seat, also called Lebanon, was founded almost 300 years ago.

This area is easy to get to from Interstates 78 and 80, and is a lovely place for 55+ adults who are looking to settle into a neighborhood with beautiful countryside near all of the modern conveniences. Within Lebanon city, there are 10 public parks, including 3,515-acre Swatara State Park and Coleman Memorial Park. Hersheypark is a few miles east of the county, as is the Susquehanna River, which provides a myriad of recreational activities for all ages.

Golfers have their pick of many Lebanon golf clubs, including Iron Valley, Royal Oaks, and Fairview. Shoppers can find everything they need at downtown shops like Lebanon Farmers Market Home Depot, and a Walmart Supercenter. Other reasons to retire in Lebanon include a lower than average cost of living, and top-tier hospitals in those three nearby big cities.

Arbor Gate – Myerstown, PA

One of the most affordable 55+ communities in this county is Arbor Gate. Built from 1997 to 2005, it has 378 resale homes. Its rural setting just five minutes from downtown Lebanon and 20 minutes from Reading provides a beautiful backdrop for this neighborhood.

Arbor Gate is a land-lease community, and the majority of its homes are single family. There are 10 models ranging from 1,234 to 2,058 square feet. These offer two or three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and attached one or two-car garages. This community’s shining star is Lakeview Center, a private clubhouse that is next to a stocked, three-acre lake. Residents enjoy paddle boating and fishing here. Inside, there is an exercise room, activity rooms, and a beauty salon.

Briar Lake – Lebanon, PA

High $100s – High $200s

Living by a lake does have its benefits, and the 55+ residents at Briar Lake are happy to take advantage of them. Briar Lake has just 113 attached and single-family resale homes built from 2005 to 2013. There are four attached townhome floor plans sized from 1,218 to 2,078 square feet.

These have two bedrooms and bathrooms, and attached garages. There are six single-family models sized from 1,296 to 2,178 square feet. These offer three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and attached two-car garages. All of the homes at Briar Lake feature first-floor master suites.

Like Arbor Gate, this community has its own fishing lake, albeit larger, at seven acres. Stoever’s Dam Park is also minutes away; history buffs can visit the The Lebanon County Historical Society to learn about the county’s many historical landmarks.

Alden Place – Lebanon, PA

High $100s – Low $400s

Alden Place appeals to active adults seeking new and resale homes in a larger community. Construction started in 2009 by Alden Homes and upon completion it will have 505 attached and single-family homes.

The property spans 270 acres that features mature trees and gently rolling hills. Homes comes in several different collections and styles. They range in size from 1,449 to 2,473 square feet and include one to two bedrooms, two to three-and-a-half bathrooms, and two-car garages.

The exclusive clubhouse, the Alden Club, features an indoor pool, exercise room, café, salon and library; outside, there is a community canoeing and fishing lake, plus nature trails.

Heritage Run – Lebanon, PA

High $100s – Low $200s

An intimate active adult community of just 88 residences, Heritage Run is also affordable and rich in scenic beauty. When completed, it will have colonial-style single family homes built by Woodland Contractors.

The models range from 1,206 to 1,677 square feet with one to three bedrooms, one-and-a-half to two bathrooms, and attached one-car garages. Some models also include dens and outdoor patios. A homeowners’ association fee covers lawn care, plus trash and snow removal.

Lebanon Country Club is one of the many nearby golf clubs. It is a short drive away and paid membership includes access to their beautiful golf course and tennis facilities. The Lebanon Valley Mall is also minutes away, as is Lebanon VA Medical Center.
