The Baltimore area provides adults over 55 with a variety of active living communities. For many people looking for a retirement home or a low-maintenance lifestyle, downsizing becomes a natural part of that process. In other parts of Maryland, prospective homebuyers can expect to find single-family homes, condos, and attached models that are under or around 1,500 square feet. However, in the denser Baltimore-D.C. corridor, most active adult communities that offer smaller homes are condominium communities.
In the Baltimore area specifically, the southwestern and western suburbs include many small condo communities, perfect for low-maintenance living. Here are five Baltimore-area condo communities for active adults who are looking to downsize.
Gatherings at Lyndwood
Eight buildings with a total of 216 condo units comprise the age-restricted community of Gatherings at Lyndwood. The units are between 1,400 and 1,900 square feet and include two bedrooms, two baths, and large walk-in closets. Residents also have access to either underground garage parking or a detached garage.
Homeowners enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle, with elevator access in every building and additional security features like intercom systems and automatically locking doors in the lobbies. Residents don’t have to worry about bringing along their exercise equipment or needing extra space to socialize at home. The clubhouse includes an exercise room, lounge, craft room, catering kitchen, and bar as well as an outdoor pool, patio, and gazebo. Located in Elkridge, the community is next to the Timbers at Troy golf course, and it's minutes from I-95.
Located just outside Baltimore in Catonsville, Patapsco Overlook is an intimate community of just 80 condo units. These 1,455 square-foot models include two bedrooms, two bathrooms, walk-in closets for extra storage space, and an optional den. J. Kirby Development completed construction on the community in 2017, and homes are now offered on a resale basis.
Residents can enjoy getting to know their neighbors in the social spaces located in each condo building or at the separate clubhouse which offers an exercise room and an outdoor patio. Residents don’t need to worry about building maintenance or outdoor upkeep, but instead, they can enjoy an easy commute into Baltimore or the quaint main street in Catonsville.
A number of communities in Ellicott City are perfect for downsizing. Village Crest is the largest of these, with 406 attached and condominium homes. While the attached models are slightly larger at 2,100 square feet, the condos range between 1,330 and 1,574 square feet.
These compact living spaces include two to three bedrooms and two baths. Village Crest is located within the larger planned community of Taylor Village, where residents can enjoy a clubhouse, three outdoor pools, a playground for grandkids, and tennis courts. Village Crest provides age-restricted amenities for homeowners, including a clubhouse with an indoor pool, an exercise room, meeting rooms, a multi-purpose room, computers, a dance floor, and a library.
Ellicott’s Retreat is a brand-new community being built by Ryan Homes in Ellicott City. Located near the intersection of routes 29 and 40, residents have easy access to both shopping and restaurants as well as the scenic Patapsco Valley State Park.
The 160 condos feature open floor plans with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, all within 1,489 to 1,776 square feet of living space. These modern homes also include hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, recessed lighting, and balconies or patios. Residents gather and get to know each other at the community clubhouse.
Gatherings at Ellicott Mills
Built by Beazer Homes between 2013 and 2018, Gatherings at Ellicott Mills is another community of attached and condominium homes in the Ellicott City area. The 81 condos are now offered on a resale basis. Similar to those in other communities, the condos range between 1,460 to 1,968 square feet with two bedrooms and two bathrooms; some models offer an optional den.
The clubhouse includes an exercise room and a multipurpose room, although residents can also easily explore all the Baltimore area has to offer.
