Active adults seeking a Northern Illinois retirement have a number of best-selling communities to choose from.

If you’ve been following along with some of the latest rankings and lists on, then you’ll know about last month’s best-selling active adult communities and the 55 Best 55+ Communities of 2019. But have you ever wondered what Illinois homebuyers are up to?

We decided to take a much closer look at sales made through to figure out the best-selling 55+ communities of Illinois so far this year. Since this list uses sales data through the site, it doesn’t represent total sales in any given community.

Whether Illinois retirees want a community that’s large or small, resort-style or tight-knit, or located in the northwest or southwest suburbs, the Chicagoland area has plenty of popular communities to choose from. Read on to explore the five best-selling 55+ communities in Illinois for 2019.

Sun City Huntley - Huntley

Mid $100s - High $400s 

The current best-selling active adult community in Illinois is also one of the state’s most popular: Sun City Huntley. This expansive Del Webb 55+ community consists of 5,489 homes across 2,300 acres, making it one of the largest in the Midwest.

The luxury resort-style amenities draw many retirees who want to live an active lifestyle. The 94,000-square-foot Prairie Lodge serves as the community center and boasts features such as a restaurant, a fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, crafts studios, game rooms, and a performing arts theater.

In addition to another clubhouse and a woodworking shop, residents can also enjoy an 18-hole golf course, a fishing lake, walking and biking trails, wildflower parks, gardening plots, and athletic courts.

Carillon - Plainfield

Mid $100s - High $300s 

Located southwest of downtown Chicago, Carillon offers another affordable retirement community near suburbs such as Naperville, Aurora, and Joliet. This gated 55+ community includes 2,097 single-family, attached, and condominium homes

The community’s most striking feature is the public 27-hole golf course, The Links at Carillon, that weaves throughout the development. Additional sought-after amenities include the 32,000-square-foot clubhouse, a grand ballroom, plus indoor and outdoor pools.

Many of the community’s clubs, classes, and activities take place within the spacious clubhouse. Popular lifestyle activities include bowling league, exercise classes, line dancing, travel club, and card tournaments. Community events include movie nights, health fairs, craft shows, and community association meetings. 

Carillon Lakes - Crest Hill

Mid $100s - Low $300s

Active adults who want to retire near Plainfield have another best-selling option close by. About four miles south of Carillon, the gated 55+ community Carillon Lakes offers another opportunity for a Northern Illinois retirement. 

Builder Cambridge Homes completed the construction of Carillon Lakes in 2007. The community includes 1,113 single-family and attached homes with a low-maintenance lifestyle. The homeowners’ association takes care of lawn care and snow removal for all residents, while attached homeowners also receive exterior home maintenance.

The attached homes range from 1,107 to 1,694 square feet with one to three bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, and attached two-car garages. The single-family homes feature 1,414 to 2,322 square feet with two or three bedrooms, a den, two or two-and-a-half bathrooms, and attached two-car garages.

Edgewater - Elgin

Low $200s - Mid $400s

The best-selling 55+ community in Elgin, IL is Edgewater, a Del Webb development built from 2005 to 2017. This gated 55+ community features 1,040 single-family homes with access to a substantial selection of amenities

The 23,000-square-foot Creekside Lodge includes a ballroom, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an indoor lap pool and spa, computers, a library, plus spaces and studios for arts and crafts, hobbies, games, and billiards. Outdoors, residents enjoy a swimming pool and patio, walking and biking trails, and courts for tennis and bocce ball.

A full-time lifestyle director coordinates the many activities, clubs, and groups that meet at Edgewater. Some of the offerings include walking club, line dancing, bicycle club, and hole-in-one golf club. A monthly community magazine publishes a schedule of upcoming events as well as any notable news. 

Saddlebrook Farms - Grayslake

Below $100k - High $200s

Saddlebrook Farms in Grayslake is one of the most affordable best-selling 55+ communities in Lake County. The new and resale single-family homes range from 1,169 to 2,516 square feet, allowing retirees to downsize or find a more spacious residence. 

Some of the unique features of this age-restricted community include its scenic location with over 100 acres of lakes, nature preserves, and even a working farm. The community clubhouse is even a repurposed rustic cabin with a charming cottage feel.

Even though the community plans to include 2,000 single-family homes upon completion, it still maintains a small-town neighborhood feel. Many homes feature front porches, back decks, and open floor plans ideal for gathering with neighbors, family, and friends.
