Due to its climate, Arizona is a popular retirement destination. It has a wide range of 55+ active adult retirement communities, from huge communities (like the original Sun City) with over 27,000 homes to more intimate communities of fewer than 100 residences.

When making an informed choice between these many Arizona retirement options, it can help to know the best-selling ones. You can discover which communities are the most popular among people who have already done the research and made the journey. 

Naturally, the larger communities tend to be the most favored, but that isn’t always the case. By analyzing the sales from customers, we’ve compiled a list of the five best-selling communities in Arizona. 

1. Province – Maricopa, AZ

High $100s – High $500s

Province is the number one best-selling Arizona retirement community. It’s a gated community for the 55+ active adult, and it has 2,217 attached and single-family homes. It’s located in the city of Maricopa, which has about 50,000 people, and it’s roughly a 40-minute drive south of Downtown Phoenix. It’s a community for those who want to be close to the Arizona desert and mountains, rather than in a city.

Among the many attractions of Province are the number of amenities it provides for residents. These include a 32,000-square-foot clubhouse, a fitness center, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, and 50 acres of scenic lakes. Sports enthusiasts can choose between tennis, bocce, pickleball, basketball, and shuffleboard. There’s also an 18-hole putting green. Those keen on arts and crafts can make use of the ceramics studio, paint and stained glass studio, and the sewing and quilting studio.

2. SaddleBrooke – Tucson, AZ

High $100s – High $900s

With 4,589 attached and single-family homes, SaddleBrooke is a Robson-built community designed for the younger 40+ active adult. It’s in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, providing residents with wonderful mountain views, but it’s also only a 45-minute drive from Downtown Tucson.

One of the reasons for SaddleBrooke’s popularity is the array of excellent amenities including two 18-hole golf clubs, both with pro shops and driving ranges and one with a putting area. In addition, there’s the aptly-named MountainView Country Club, which has a 28,500-square-foot clubhouse with a bistro, a library, a fitness center, two outdoor pools, tennis courts, and arts and crafts studios, as well as studios for dance, yoga, and aerobics.

In addition to the golf and country clubs, residents here also have the DesertView Sports Club and Performing Arts Theater. This includes a 478-seat auditorium, a second fitness center; more dance, yoga, and aerobics studios; an outdoor lap pool; and courts for basketball, volleyball, tennis, and badminton. Little wonder that SaddleBrooke is the second best-selling community in Arizona. 

3. Sun City West – Sun City West, AZ

Low $100s – High $600s

Sun City’s communities are always popular with users, and Sun City West is the third and the largest in our list of best-selling Arizona communities. It has 16,900 single-family and attached homes for the 55+ active adult. It’s located near the city of Surprise, a 45-minute drive northwest of Downtown Phoenix, and it appeals to those who want city living and a large community with many facilities.

Some of the amenities here include a hospital, 18 places of worship, nine golf courses, nine restaurants, four recreation centers, shops, banks, and pharmacies. Residents also have access to five swimming pools (both indoors and out) while sports fans can choose from tennis, pickleball, basketball, softball, table tennis, bocce, racquetball, mini golf, and lawn bowling. There are also numerous arts and crafts studios and many groups and classes to join. 

4. Mission Royale – Casa Grande, AZ

High $100s – Mid $300s

Mission Royale is a community of 1,292 single-family homes with a 55+ age restriction. It’s in Casa Grande, a town of almost 60,000 people that’s roughly midway between Tucson and Phoenix. It’s a place for those who prefer small-town living and want to be surrounded by a real desert landscape.

Amenities include an 18-hole golf course, a 15,000-square-foot clubhouse, a ballroom, a restaurant, a fitness center, a library, two outdoor pools, and courts for tennis and pickleball. There are also hiking and biking trails, and an aerobics studio. There are lots of clubs, groups, activities, and classes, including ballroom dancing, fishing, billiards, yoga, writing, and an RV club.

5. Sun City Grand – Surprise, AZ

Low $200s – Mid $800s

Sun City Grand has 9,802 homes, including condos, attached, and single-family homes for the 45+ active adult. It’s in the city of Surprise on the very edge of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, and a 45-minute drive from Downtown Phoenix. It offers the benefit of urban living while being close to the desert and mountain landscapes for which Arizona is renowned: the 30,000-acre White Tank Mountain Regional Park is only a 20-minute drive away. 

Amenities are numerous and include four golf courses, three clubhouses, a spa and fitness center, an indoor walking track, and four pools, including indoor and outdoor lap pools. There are also fishing lakes, hiking and biking trails, RV parking, an outdoor amphitheater, and courts for tennis, pickleball, and bocce. Arts and crafts enthusiasts can use the craft rooms, as well as the sewing room and the woodworking shop. With several dozen clubs, groups, activities, and classes to choose from, it’s little wonder why Sun City Grand is also one of the top five best-selling communities in Arizona.
