Relocating in retirement doesn’t have to mean giving up a white Christmas. There are many active adult communities throughout the country that offer a variety of amenities and activities for those who want to live in a setting that enjoys all four seasons. These are five of our favorites.
1. Asheville, North Carolina
With its beautiful scenery and tranquil lifestyle, Asheville has quickly become one of the country’s hottest retirement locations. The town’s diverse art and music festivals, unique shopping centers, and great restaurants are enhanced by the picturesque natural beauty that changes with each passing season. Though the area offers some age-restricted communities, such as Pinebrook Farms, there are also many open age communities which will appeal to active adults, such as Biltmore Lake.
2. Denver, Colorado
Though Denver itself is often shielded from large amounts of snow, it can be an ideal spot for a white Christmas, especially for those who venture into the nearby mountains. The Winter Park Resort area is famous for its skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports and activities. Some of the most popular active adult communities in the Denver area include Heritage Todd Creek by Lennar Homes, Anthem Ranch by Del Webb, and Windsor Gardens.
3. Reno, Nevada
Situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Reno enjoys the complete range of seasons, including light to moderate snowfall each winter. Though Reno is a more quiet alternative to Las Vegas, the area offers plenty of attractions, such as great restaurants, diverse shopping centers, quality medical centers and exciting casinos. Nearby Lake Tahoe is an ideal place for a local ski trip. At Sierra Canyon by Del Webb, active adults can take advantage of many amenities throughout the winter, including the indoor heated swimming pool and indoor walking track.
4. Ocean County, New Jersey
With its proximity to both beach and urban attractions, Ocean County offers plenty to do year-round. It can also be a lovely place to spend a white Christmas. Large communities such as Renaissance at Manchester and Westlake Golf and Country Club provide a wide range of amenities, including indoor swimming pools, arts and crafts studios, game rooms, and other attractions that can be enjoyed when the weather outside is frightful. It’s also easy to arrange holiday shopping trips to nearby Philadelphia or New York City.
5. Chicago, Illinois
While Illinois may not immediately spring to mind when thinking of retirement locations, the Chicago area offers a surprising number of amenity-rich active adult communities. The area certainly experiences all four seasons, with winters that are cold and snowy. For those who want a wide variety of amenities, the Chicago area offers large golf course communities such as Sun City Huntley by Del Webb and Carillon in Plainfield. The area’s more intimate communities include Regency at The Woods of South Barrington and Steeplechase at Churchill Club.
