      Hawthorn Woods is situated in Northern Illinois, located 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. Summers in the region are warm to hot and humid, while winters can be exceptionally cold and snowy. Residents can expect and average amount of rainfall, higher-than-average amounts of snow, and approximately 193 sunny days throughout each year. 

      As part of the far northwestern suburbs of Chicago, Hawthorn Woods is mostly flatland and a mix of wooded areas and residential neighborhoods. The area is also dotted with numerous kettle lakes and ponds. 

      Recreation, Culture & Entertainment 

      Hawthorn Woods has a relaxed environment which is due to its small-town, neighborly feel. It is home to 10 community and neighborhood park areas. Each of these locations offer unique activities such as two of the most popular: Hawthorn Woods Aquatic Center and Village Barn. Both of these places host events year round such as Concerts in the Parks, Movies in the Barn, a Holiday Craft Fair, and more. 

      Aside from these, Hawthorn Woods also has two large golf courses which are ideal for an active lifestyle. Not to mention, the town is in driving distance of downtown Chicago, which provides the perfect opportunity for a day trip or weekend getaway.

      The cost of living in Hawthorn Woods is higher when compared nationwide. This is primarily due to the cost of housing which is well above the U.S median. 

      In Illinois, Social Security benefits and income from retirement plans are all exempt from taxation. Also, the state’s flat income tax rate is low compared to the national average. Residents who are 65+ are eligible for certain tax breaks on their home, which can be up to $5,000. The combined sales tax rate in Hawthorn Woods is 7 percent.

      Hawthorn Woods is within 15 miles of six highly rated hospitals and medical centers. In its neighboring town, Park Ridge, residents can find two hospitals which are ranked nationally by U.S News: Advocate Children’s Hospital-Park Ridge and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
