Dayton is a town in Central New Jersey southwest of New York. Its proximity to the entertainment and cultural events of New York as well as its abundant local outdoor recreation make it a popular retirement destination.

Climate & Geography

Dayton is a small town in Middlesex County. This region experiences four distinct seasons with warm, humid summers and freezing winters. Residents can also expect more than average rain totals per year. 

Dayton’s terrain consists of rolling, wooded hills and agricultural farmland. There are several forested areas surrounding the town, including the Pigeon Swamp State Park to the east and Reichler Park to the west.

Recreation, Culture, & Entertainment 

Residents enjoy the community feeling in Dayton. The area is mainly residential, but retirees can shop at nearby Heritage Square and Kendall Park Shopping Center. 

Aside from shopping, there are plenty of local parks and green areas. The Plainsboro Preserve, one of the largest natural spaces in the region, is a heavily forested area for hiking and wildlife viewing. Nearby Reicher Park and Pigeon Swamp are also popular for their wooded walking trails.

For more entertainment, dining, and cultural events, residents head to Princeton, Trenton and New Brunswick, all within a half-hour drive.

Cost of Living & Taxes 

The overall cost of living in Dayton is above the national average because of very high housing costs. 

New Jersey does not tax Social Security, and there is a large deduction available for all other forms of retirement income. There is also a Property Tax Reimbursement Program, which reimburses eligible retirees for property tax increases. The combined sales tax rate in Dayton is 6.63 percent. 

Health Care 

The Trenton metro area ranks in the top 105 communities on Gallup’s Well-Being Index.

There are two hospitals that are nationally ranked by U.S. News near Dayton: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and St. Peter’s University Hospital. Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro is high performing.
