The Williamsburg area in Virginia has a lot to offer active adults looking to maintain an active lifestyle in retirement.

Jamestown, the first American settlement, is just a few miles away from the city center and is home to the College of William & Mary, one of the most historic universities in the United States, and Virginia’s first capital building.

No one, however, would mistake Williamsburg Area  as being an area that’s stuck in the past. It is a modern, vibrant city with many of the region’s top restaurants along with great shopping options, and plenty of museums and cultural attractions to keep even the most curious explorer occupied indefinitely. Williamsburg’s ideal location has made it a destination for active adults. The selection below represents some of the best the area has to offer.

Ford’s Colony – Williamsburg

Located in the northwestern portion of Williamsburg, Ford’s Colony is far and away the largest community in the Williamsburg Area, boasting 3,250 homes and counting. There are many distinct neighborhoods with housing options ranging from high-end condos to estate-style single-family homes. The amenities are just as expansive as the community itself, with three 18-hole golf courses with luxurious clubhouses equally useful for casually socializing with neighbors or attending large events. Miles of walking and cycling trails weave through 200 acres of scenic preserved natural space, giving homeowners plenty to explore.

Colonial Heritage – Williamsburg

Renowned homebuilder Lennar Homes began construction on Colonial Heritage in 2004 with plans calling for 1,800 attached duplex and single-family homes exclusively for those aged 55 and better. Residents and their visitors are greeted by the Heritage Clubhouse at the entrance of the community. Its design, with its traditional elements, modern amenities, and award-winning 18-hole golf course welcomes visitors and is the social hub of the community. Modern, energy-efficient home designs are found throughout and are available in a diverse range of price points.

The Settlement at Powhatan Creek – Williamsburg

Homebuyers looking for a smaller community that still delivers excellent amenities and a great location have a lot to love about The Settlement at Powhatan Creek. Located just five miles from downtown Williamsburg, residents of this 55+ community of 400 single-family and attached homes enjoy easy access to all of the attractions, shopping, dining, and entertainment options that make this such a desirable place to call home. The clubhouse is a popular destination for homeowners with its exercise facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, a tennis court, and plenty of space for meetings and social gatherings.

Villas at Five Forks – Williamsburg

With just 90 attached homes, this community is by far the most intimate in Williamsburg. In this case, bigger is not always better. Completed in 2013 by Epcon Communities, Villas at Five Forks offers homebuyers smart-sized homes and a lock-and-leave lifestyle, perfect for those who love to travel. There is a clubhouse with attractive amenities like an exercise room, putting green, heated outdoor pool, and lots of flexible space for neighborhood gatherings or holiday celebrations. Located halfway between the James River and downtown Williamsburg, residents enjoy living in an area not only steeped with history, but also near all sorts of daily conveniences.
