Overview

Winters are cold with  temperatures falling into the mid 20s while summers are hot and rainy with temperatures reaching the high 80s. The city has high precipitation and rainfall averages. It is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, a segment of the Appalachian Mountains, and is the gateway to the Cherokee Indian Reservation, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the French Broad River. 

It is easiest to travel through the city by car because of its elevation and challenging mountainous terrain but is also accessible by walking and biking.

With a rich history dating back prior to the Civil War, the city of Asheville is a popular place to live in North Carolina, ranked as one of the most populous cities in the state. The city is rich in architecture including the Basilica of St. Lawrence and Grove Park Inn. Many of its buildings date back centuries with a downtown district that largely has remained unaltered to date. 

The city has a strong tradition of festivals and street performances. The Blue Ridge Mountains paint a beautiful background to an already rich scenery of historical buildings, breweries, and street art, making Asheville a unique place to live.

The cost of living in Asheville is higher than in the rest of the state and the country. The  cost of living is primarily due to the high home costs averaging in the high $200,000 range. Though the cost of living is high, it still continues to attract newcomers mostly students from the University of North Carolina and retirees. 

North Carolina state laws and legislatures allow for only property and sales taxes to be imposed. Municipalities do not implement their own taxes and must receive state approval for any fees outside of the property and sales tax.  

Health Care

Outcome, affordability, and access land Asheville’s Buncombe County among the healthiest counties in the country; this is thanks to the majority of the population ranking in healthy weight, non-smokers, and active lifestyles. 

The city is famous for its innovation in health care, including homeopathic healing clinics and is home to award winning hospitals like Mission Hospital, famous for its outstanding cardiology department.
