South Carolina is home to almost 100 active adult communities, each of which offers its residents a variety of housing options, price points, and amenities. In recent years, the fast-growing sport of pickleball has become one of the most popular amenities active adults want their neighborhoods to have. And, builders have taken action by adding more pickleball courts to developments.

For the 55+ crowd considering South Carolina for retirement, there are a number of neighborhoods along the coast that are home to several pickleball courts as well as organized pickleball clubs. Here are four Coastal South Carolina communities big on pickleball.

Cresswind CharlestonSummerville, SC

Cresswind Charleston is a gated, age-restricted community that’s located just a short drive from historic Downtown Charleston. It features 600 single-family homes in a variety of floor plans that range from 1,454 to 2,547 square feet with two to three bedrooms, two to three-and-a-half bathrooms, and two-car garages.

Noteworthy amenities include a clubhouse, an outdoor pool and patio, horseshoe pits, walking and biking trails, plus multiple tennis, bocce, and pickleball courts. In addition to the amenities, Cresswind Charleston also has several organized clubs and interest groups, including a popular pickleball club where neighbors can get active and socialize.

Another Coastal South Carolina community that’s caught on to the pickleball trend is Del Webb Charleston at Nexton. The 350-acre neighborhood will have a thousand single-family homes upon completion with a wide variety of floor plans for prospective homebuyers to choose between. Plans vary between 1,355 and 3,810 square feet with two to four bedrooms, two to four bathrooms, and two- or two-and-a-half-car garages.

Amenities include a 25,000-square-foot clubhouse, indoor and outdoor pools, an event lawn, and 2,000 acres of greenspace. Del Webb Charleston at Nexton residents will have no trouble staying fit and active with plenty of recreation and exercise options, including a state-of-the-art fitness center, a number of tennis and pickleball courts, and 50 miles of walking trails. Homeowners will also find an active pickleball club within the community.

Latitude Margaritaville Hilton HeadHardeeville, SC

Located near the sandy shores of Hilton Head in the small town of Hardeeville, Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head not only offers residents an enviable location but also a low-maintenance lifestyle with plenty of resort-style amenities to take advantage of. The community will have 3,000 new, single-family homes upon final completion. There are more than a dozen unique floor plans that range from 1,503 to 2,564 square feet with two to three bedrooms, two to three-and-a-half bathrooms, and two-car garages.

Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head is jam-packed with resort-style amenities, and pickleball enthusiasts will be glad to know there are several courts on the property as well as pickleball games through the community’s organized club. Other amenities within the development include—but are not limited to—a fitness center, a theater, swimming pools, an on-site restaurant, and a private beach area.

With more than 8,000 homes, the gated and age-restricted community of Sun City Hilton Head has many aspects that make it one of the most desirable active adult communities in the state. The large Del Webb community has both new and resale homes on the market with several housing options available, from 1,000-square-foot townhomes to single-family homes with more than 4,000 square feet of living space.

Sun City Hilton Head also features an impressive list of amenities that ranges from a 45-acre town center and three 18-hole golf courses to a 20-acre fishing lake and several dozen athletic courts. As far as pickleball goes, there are a dozen courts where residents can challenge neighbors to a friendly game or two. For those who want a little more competition, there’s an organized pickleball club to join.
