Portland is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon. It’s the largest and most populous city in the state. Retirees who are attracted to a bustling city with a wide variety of activities are attracted to Portland. The natural beauty and vibrant art scene has made Portland a top city for retirement.

Climate & Geography

Portland has a temperate oceanic climate. The average annual high temperature is in the low 60s and the average annual low temperature is in the mid 40s. The average annual precipitation is around 35 inches of rainfall. 

Mount St. Helens is approximately 50 miles northeast and easily visible from Portland. The banks of the Willamette River flows through the city and ultimately into the Columbia River. The majority of the city is relatively flat with the foothills of the Tualatin Mountains surrounding the southwest and northwest parts.  

Recreation, Culture, & Entertainment

The Pacific Ocean coastline, Willamette Valley, and Columbia River offer exceptional recreational activities. Residents take in natural scenery by visiting the International Rose Test Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden, and the Lan Su Chinese Garden. There’s a large selection of parks for active adults to take a stroll or bike ride such as Washington Park, Forest Park, and Mount Tabor Park. 

Indoor activities include visiting museums like the Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry or shopping at Washington Square. Residents can also visit the popular Portland Saturday Market, the largest continually operating arts and crafts market in the country, and the Portland Farmers Market on Saturday at Portland State University. 

Residents also enjoy visiting the Oregon Zoo, catching shows at Portland Center State at The Armory, and enjoying local beers at several craft breweries.
