Golf course communities have a reputation for being exclusive and expensive, but Arizona has plenty of affordable active adult communities with golf courses. Some of these communities even have homes available for under $200k.
There are well over 100 communities that either have their own golf courses or direct access to nearby courses, and no community in Arizona is far from a golf course anyway. However, if you have a passion for golf and want a more affordable home, it makes sense to look for a community that has its own course so you don't have to rely on public courses.
Arizona has the ideal climate for playing golf, with about 300 days of sunshine each year. You’re probably better to look at communities in Central and Southern Arizona, which have sunnier climates than Northern Arizona, although the summer temperatures can get well into the 100s, turning golf into an early-morning activity. All the more reason to choose a community where the golf course is just outside your door, allowing you to drive there and back on your golf cart.
Here are the most affordable golf course communities in Arizona:
Leisure World has two 18-hole courses and a 19th-hole cafe. The Coyote Run Golf Course is 6,437 yards and provides views of the nearby Superstition Mountains. The Heron Lakes Golf Course is 4,024 yards, and it's aimed more at the novice player while still presenting a challenge to the experienced golfer with its narrow fairways. It also has mountain views and, of course, lakes.
Other amenities at Leisure World include three outdoor pools, six tennis courts, hiking and biking trails, and a 10,000-square-foot fitness center. There are a number of homes for sale starting in the low $100s.
The Sun Village golf course is a public course, but residents pay reduced fees to use the course. It’s an 18-hole, par-54 course of 2,019 yards, with plenty of water hazards on the back nine, and it also has a putting green and a chipping area.
The Springs at Santa Rita
The Springs at Santa Rita is in Green Valley, and it's a gated community of 442 homes for the 55+ active adult. Although it doesn’t have its own golf course, it overlooks the Torres Blancas Golf Club, a par-72 course with three lakes and a maximum yardage of 7,111. There are also seven more courses easily accessible within the Green Valley area.
Amenities for the active adult in The Springs at Santa Rita include an outdoor pool and spa, hiking and biking trails, a fitness center, and a 24-acre private park. Homes for sale start in the mid $100s.
Sunbird is in Chandler, at the southern end of the Greater Phoenix area and on the edge of undeveloped Native American land. It’s a gated community of 1,631 single-family homes for the 55+ active adult.
The community is actually built around the 18-hole Sunbird Golf Course, meaning it’s filled with keen golfers who want to enjoy the 4,457-yard, par-66 course which was created by Gary Panks. The course is also open to non-residents of Sunbird, but residents get favorable rates. There's also a large number of other public and private courses within a short driving distance of Sunbird.
In addition to golf, amenities that residents can enjoy include a fitness center, an outdoor pool, a 43,000-square-foot clubhouse, four tennis courts, and six shuffleboard courts. You buy a home here in the high $100s.
Fountain of the Sun
Fountain of the Sun is a gated community of 2,296 homes for the 55+ active adult in Mesa. Golf is very much at the center of Fountain of the Sun as the 18-hole country club course weaves its way around the community, making it easily accessible to all residents. The 4,189-yard, par-62 course also has a driving range and a pro shop.
Fountain of the Sun’s other amenities include a fitness center, a heated outdoor pool and spa, and courts for pickleball and shuffleboard. Homes for sale start in the low $100s, making this one of the most affordable golf communities in Arizona.
