Golf course communities have a reputation for being exclusive and expensive, but Arizona has plenty of affordable active adult communities with golf courses. Some of these communities even have homes available for under $200k. 

No community in Arizona is far from a golf course. However, if you have a passion for golf and want a more affordable home, it makes sense to look for a community that has its own course so you don’t have to rely on public courses.

Arizona has the ideal climate for playing golf, with about 300 days of sunshine each year. You’re probably better to look at communities in Central and Southern Arizona, which have sunnier climates than Northern Arizona, although the summer temperatures can get well into the 100s, turning golf into an early-morning activity. All the more reason to choose a community where the golf course is just outside your door, allowing you to drive there and back on your golf cart.

Leisure World is a gated community of 2,664 homes for 55+ active adults in Mesa—Arizona’s third most populated city and part of the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Current homes for sale range from the low $200s to the high $700s.

Leisure World has two 18-hole courses and a 19th-hole cafe. The Coyote Run Golf Course is 6,437 yards and provides views of the nearby Superstition Mountains. The Heron Lakes Golf Course is 4,024 yards, and it’s aimed more at the novice player while still presenting a challenge to the experienced golfer with its narrow fairways. It also has mountain views and, of course, lakes. Other amenities at Leisure World include three outdoor pools, six tennis courts, hiking and biking trails, and a 10,000-square-foot fitness center.

Sun VillageSurprise, AZ

Sun Village is located in the city of Surprise, a 40-minute drive northwest of Phoenix but still part of the Greater Phoenix area. It’s a gated community of 1,382 homes for 55+ active adults. Homes for sale can be found in the low to mid $200s.

The Sun Village golf course is a public course, but residents pay reduced fees to use the course. It’s an 18-hole, par-54 course of 2,019 yards, with plenty of water hazards on the back nine, and it also has a putting green and a chipping area. Other amenities at Sun Village include a fitness center, an outdoor pool and spa, and courts for tennis, pickleball, and shuffleboard.

The Springs at Santa RitaGreen Valley, AZ

The community is actually built around the 18-hole Sunbird Golf Course, meaning it’s filled with keen golfers who want to enjoy the 4,457-yard, par-66 course which was created by Gary Panks. The course is also open to non-residents of Sunbird, but residents get favorable rates. There’s also a large number of other public and private courses within a short driving distance of Sunbird. 

In addition to golf, amenities that residents can enjoy include a fitness center, an outdoor pool, a 43,000-square-foot clubhouse, four tennis courts, and six shuffleboard courts. Current homes for sale range from the high $300s to the low $400s.
