What You’ll Gain From Reading This Article: This article provides information about Palm City, Florida, as a potential retirement destination. The article also provides insights into the climate, outdoor recreation options, cost of living, taxes, health care facilities, restaurants, shopping, cultural attractions, and specific 55+ communities in the area.

South Florida and cities like Palm Beach have long been favorite retirement destinations among active adults. However, several lesser-known towns provide retirees with the same balmy Florida weather and easy coastal access. These hotspots also offer affordable prices and a more laid-back atmosphere with an under-the-radar appeal. For those interested in Palm City, Florida real estate, this place is a real hidden gem.

Located along the Treasure Coast, Palm City provides all the warm weather and sunshine that Florida is known for. Residents can also spend their days out on the water boating and fishing or playing golf on one of the many local courses. Here’s more information about what makes Palm City an attractive option for active adults:

Climate

Palm City residents can expect consistently warm temperatures year-round with high humidity, thanks to the area’s tropical climate. While the region gets a fair amount of rain (and the occasional hurricane), locals don’t endure freezing temperatures or winter storms. Temperatures are in the low 90s during the warmest months of the year and can get as low as 50 degrees during the dead of winter.

Outdoor Recreation Options

With such great weather, miles of Atlantic shoreline, and the St. Lucie River nearby, Palm City residents can take their pick from an endless supply of outdoor activities. A few go-tos within driving distance are Jensen Sea Turtle Beach, Hobe Sound Beach, and Stuart Beach. For the adventure-seeking crowd, there’s no shortage of water recreation, from boating and deep-sea fishing to snorkeling and kayaking.

Palm City also offers plenty of options for those who prefer to stay on dry land. There are several parks to choose from in the area, including Leighton Park, Jock Leighton Park, Lance Corporal Justin Wilson Memorial Park, and Pendarvis Cove Park.

The area’s many golf courses are also a huge draw for Palm City. The long list of courses includes the Crane Watch Golf Club, the Palm Cove Golf and Yacht Club, the Hammock Creek Golf Club, and the Monarch Country Club. Horseback riding is another popular outdoor activity. There are several local stables open to equestrians, including the Green Ridge Stables, the Treasure Coast Stables, and the Choyce Horseback Riding and Equitours

Cost of Living

It’s no secret that South Florida is an extremely popular retirement destination. Therefore, the cost of living has greatly increased in areas like West Palm Beach. This makes them less affordable for many retirees on a fixed income.

Places like Palm City are great alternatives to the more expensive areas of South Florida. However, while Palm City’s cost of living may be lower than its neighbors, it’s higher than the national average. Everything—from groceries and housing to health care—is more expensive in Palm City than the average U.S. town.

Taxes

Being located in a tax-friendly state helps Palm City residents stretch their money further. Residents don’t have to pay state income tax on things like Social Security benefits or pension income. Additionally, Florida doesn’t have estate or inheritance taxes, and the state’s property taxes are lower than the national average.

Health Care

There are many primary care physicians and health care facilities within a short distance of Palm City. Nearby facilities include the Martin Medical Center, the St. Lucie Medical Center, and the Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute.

Restaurants and Shopping

Palm City is home to a wide variety of local eateries that range from beloved pizza joints to oyster bars. There’s also an assortment of international cuisines to choose from. Aside from restaurants and cafes, there’s the Treasure Coast Wine and Ale Trail for tasting locally brewed craft beer, ciders, and wine. The trail is made up of nine local breweries, a winery, a cidery, and a meadery.

As far as shopping goes, a Publix grocery store, a Walgreens pharmacy, and the Martin Downs Town Center are all nearby. Also, places like Palm City Farms Produce & Market provide the perfect place to shop for fresh, local produce.

Cultural Attractions

For more cultural amenities, Stuart is just a short drive away and boasts a vibrant downtown that’s buzzing with restaurants, art galleries, music venues, and museums. Also, West Palm Beach is only an hour away.
