South Lyon has a humid continental climate. The weather is generally influenced by the Great Lakes. Summers are hot and humid while winters are cold and snowy. The lake effect causes increased cloudiness during the winter. Residents can expect 38 inches of rain and 58 inches of snow each year.

There are several lakes surrounding the city, and Island Lake State Recreation Area is northwest of South Lyon. The terrain is mainly flat with a few gently rolling hills.

South Lyon is a haven for outdoor recreation. There are several small parks throughout the town, and Island Lake State Recreation Area to the northwest is an expansive park with trails and lake access. The Huron Valley Trail, perfect for jogging and biking, is northeast of South Lyon. Nearby golf courses include Moose Ridge Golf Course, Cattails Golf Club, Tanglewood Golf Club, and the Riverbank Golf Club.

In town, residents enjoy numerous breweries and museums as well as a vibrant historic downtown area with plenty of local shops and restaurants. Retirees can easily travel a half-hour to Ann Arbor for more cultural and art events as well.
