Overview

Mullica Hill is an unincorporated community in Harrison Township, New Jersey. The community has a rich history—dating back to the 17th century when the land was first purchased—with historic architecture built just after the Civil War. The area is also known for its many antique shops. Active adults may enjoy the quaint, close-knit community of Mullica Hill and the convenient amenities this town offers. 

Climate and Geography

Southern New Jersey’s humid subtropical climate consists of four distinct seasons, with warm, humid summers and relatively cold winters. The state's proximity to the ocean has the biggest impact on the weather, by regulating temperatures and creating humid conditions. Residents can expect an average of 45 inches of rain, 15 inches of snow, and about 205 days of sunshine throughout each year. 

Mullica Hill is located near the Great Egg Harbor Scenic and Recreational River, a national protected area. New Jersey's expansive Pinelands region also begins a few miles to the east of Mullica Hill.

With the entire community on the National Register of Historic Places, Mullica Hill is known for its rich history observed in the Colonial Revival architecture style of buildings and houses, and the dozens of antique shops on Main Street. Some of the top attractions in Mullica Hill include Heritage Vineyard, Hill Creek Farms, Creamy Acres Farm, Rosie’s Farm Market, the Yellow Garage Antiques, Canary Row Antiques and More, the Old Mills Antiques, and Mood’s Farm Market. 

Cost of Living & Taxes

The cost of living in Mullica Hill is higher than the national average but the same as the state average, with factors like grocery, housing, and utilities being higher than other places in New Jersey. However, other indexes like the cost of grocery and transportation are lower than the state average. 

New Jersey has an effective income tax rate of 1.53 percent for single filers and 3.37 percent for joint filers. Social Security benefits are not taxed in the state, however most other forms of retirement income are taxed. Residents who are 62+ may qualify for substantial deductions to help offset the cost.

Retiring homeowners may also take advantage of several property tax programs available for qualifying taxpayers, like the property tax reimbursement program. This program is available to residents who are 65+ and have lived in New Jersey for at least 10 years with income of up to $70,000. Furthermore, homeowners 65+ with income of $10,000 or less may receive a $250 tax deduction from their property taxes.
