    Spotsylvania is a county in Northern Virginia, situated within the southwestern section of the Fredericksburg metropolitan area. Retirees that are looking to live in a quiet, rural area on the east coast are sure to appreciate Spotsylvania. 

    Climate & Geography 

    The climate in Spotsylvania is humid subtropical, meaning winters are cool and mild, while summers are hot and humid. Residents can expect slightly more rainfall and slightly less snowfall than the national averages, as well as approximately 202 sunny days throughout each year. 

    The county is located near the fall line between the Piedmont foothills and the Tidewater coastal plains regions, with much of the terrain of the area made up of flatlands and gently rolling hills. The county's southwest border is made up by Lake Anna, with the city of Fredericksburg lying along the northeast border.

    Recreation, Culture, & Entertainment

    There are no incorporated towns or cities in Spotsylvania County, but the main urban center is the census-designated place Spotsylvania Courthouse, which includes the county's actual courthouse and government buildings as well as the main streets where most businesses and amenities can be found.

    For outdoor recreation, active adults frequently take a stroll and bike ride through Lake Anna State Park and Wilderness Presidential Resorts. Vineyards and wineries are scattered throughout the county. Shopping ranges from farmers markets to fashion malls. Indoor activities include visiting the museums and sports centers.

    For access to even more shopping, dining, and entertainment options, the city of Fredericksburg is less than a half hour away. Washington D.C. and Richmond are both just over an hour away, providing the perfect opportunity for a day trip or weekend getaway. 

    Cost of Living & Taxes

    The overall cost of living is higher than the state and national average, with the highest individual cost of living indexes being homes, housing, and transportation. 

    Virginia is considered quite tax friendly to retirees. The state does not tax Social Security benefits, and residents who are 65+ can deduct up to $12k out of any other forms of retirement income. Property taxes are around average, and the state sales tax is one of the lowest in the country.

    There are three highly ranked medical centers and hospitals located within 40 miles of Spotsylvania. They are Mary Washington Hospital, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, and Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center. Mary Washington Hospital is regionally ranked and rated high performing in five adult procedures/conditions. Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is rated high performing in heart failure. Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center is rated high performing in knee replacement.
