Of all the active adult communities in Northern Illinois, the renowned Sun City Huntley stands out for several reasons. This 55+ community is the largest in the Prairie State with 5,489 single-family, attached, and condominium homes across more than 2,300 acres. The development also boasts the largest clubhouse and one of the most extensive selections of resort-style amenities in the Midwest.

Additionally, Sun City Huntley provides many floor plans and home styles to choose from depending on homebuyers’ needs and preferences. Condominium homes range from 1,059 to 1,900 square feet, attached homes range from 1,014 to 1,599 square feet, and spacious single-family homes range from 1,197 to 3,204 square feet. In addition to ranch-style floor plans designed for first-floor living, residents of the attached and condominium homes also enjoy a low-maintenance lifestyle.

The world-class amenities include the 94,000-square-foot Prairie Lodge, the 20,000-square-foot Meadowview Lodge, as well as the 4,800-square-foot woodworking shop. Other amenities include state-of-the-art fitness centers, indoor and outdoor pools and spas, an indoor walking track, a performing arts theater, and an 18-hole golf course.

Grand Dominion – Mundelein, IL

As Del Webb’s first 55+ community in Lake County, Grand Dominion offers an amenity-rich lifestyle. It’s all within easy reach of some of the best outdoor recreation, entertainment options, and cultural attractions in the area. Additionally, residents are within one hour of Downtown Chicago, within 35 minutes of O’Hare International Airport, and within 25 minutes of the scenic Lake Michigan shoreline.

Built between 2006 and 2014, the Grand Dominion community consists of 725 single-family homes across five home series. The ranch-style homes range from 1,197 to 2,833 square feet with one to four bedrooms, one-and-a-half to three bathrooms, as well as attached two- or three-car garages. The homeowners’ association (HOA) takes care of all landscaping, lawn care, snow removal, and common area maintenance, which gives residents a low-maintenance lifestyle and much more free time.

The amenities center around the 17,500-square-foot Lakeside Lodge, which is home to a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools and spas, as well as plenty of multipurpose gathering spaces. Just a few of the activities offered by the community include arts and crafts classes, wine club, photography, games and cards, pickleball, and golf club.

Grand Haven – Romeoville, IL

Residents of Grand Haven have access to a community clubhouse with a fitness center, an indoor pool and spa, a ballroom, arts and crafts studios, game rooms, a salon, as well as a pub. Outdoors, the community features a pool, a patio, walking and biking trails, and a fishing lake. There are also athletic facilities for tennis, shuffleboard, bocce, basketball, and horseshoes.

Additionally, a full-time activities director coordinates the activities, clubs, and classes at Grand Haven. The full social calendar features gardening, fishing, golf club, poker, book club, and arts and crafts classes.

Edgewater – Elgin, IL

Edgewater is often compared to Sun City Huntley. After all, these two Del Webb communities in Illinois are within 15 minutes of each other. However, Edgewater stands on its own with a desirable selection of resort-style amenities in a more tight-knit community.

The ranch-style single-family homes at Edgewater come in four collections. The homes range from 1,190 to 2,833 square feet with one to four bedrooms, one-and-a-half to three bathrooms, as well as attached two- or three-car garages. Many homes also feature open-concept floor plans, spacious owner’s suites with walk-in closets, dens, and covered patios. Some homes offer finished basements for bonus space, storage, and guest bedrooms.

With an HOA that takes care of all maintenance, residents have more free time to enjoy the community amenities. The 23,000-square-foot Creekside Lodge has a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, a ballroom, and arts and crafts studios. At the clubhouse, residents gather for activities such as book club, card club, watercolors, travel club, and line dancing.

Shorewood Glen – Shorewood, IL

This gated 55+ community, built between 2004 and 2015, consists of 765 low-maintenance single-family and attached homes. The single-family homes range from 1,222 to 2,450 square feet, while the two attached floor plans offer 1,285 or 1,547 square feet.

The location of Shorewood Glen in the southwest suburbs of Chicago puts residents near Joliet, Naperville, and Aurora. Within 45 minutes, residents can drive to Chicago as well as Midway International Airport. The convenient access to Interstate 55 and Interstate 80 means that residents can travel throughout the Chicagoland area with ease.

The 17,000-square-foot Lakeview Lodge houses many community amenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness center, an indoor pool and spa, a ballroom, a catering kitchen, as well as a billiards room. The outdoor amenities feature a pool, a sundeck, tennis courts, bocce ball courts, walking and biking trails, and an 18-acre fishing lake.

Liberty Green – Bolingbrook, IL

Liberty Green broke ground in 2019 and consists of 155 single-family homes. The HOA maintains all home exteriors, which allows residents to enjoy a low-maintenance lifestyle. Designed for first-floor living, the single-family homes range from 1,683 to 1,963 square feet with two to four bedrooms, two or three bathrooms, and two- to three-car garages with options for golf cart storage.

Ashwood Crossing – Naperville, IL
