Filled to the brim with Midwestern charm, residents of Illinois have quick and convenient access to popular spots, including the many beaches to sit alongside Lake Michigan, the many scenic state parks scattered throughout the region, and of course, the city of Chicago. In Chicago, active adults can find everything from world-class shopping, restaurants, to high-end entertainment.

It’s for these reasons that Illinois has a number of popular active adult communities, many of which offer unique amenities and lifestyles. But, with so many communities to explore it can be a daunting task finding the community best suited for you. Fortunately, 55 Places is here to help. Compiling internal sales data from July 2017 to July 2018, we’ve pinned down the ten best-selling active adult communities in Illinois. Read on to learn more.

1. Sun City Huntley

Low $100s – Mid $500s

Taking the #1 spot on our list is Sun City Huntley. With over 5,400 homes, Del Webb’s Sun City Huntley is a premier active adult community with top-notch amenities and lucrative home designs. Spread across 2,300 acres, Sun City Huntley offers nearly 55 different floor plans that come in a variety of housing styles that include single-family homes, attached ranch townhomes, and condos.

At the heart of the community is the Prairie Lodge, a 94,000 square-foot clubhouse. Inside, residents will find a state-of-the-art fitness facility that comes with weight and cardiovascular equipment, an indoor walking track, an indoor lap pool, and a large 20-person indoor spa. Just outside the lodge is a resort-style pool perfect for sitting back with friends and enjoying some sun.

Besides its fitness facilities, the Prairie Lodge includes several multi-purpose rooms, like a card room, a ceramics studio, a computer lab, and a grand ballroom with an elevated stage and dance floor. Besides Prairie Lodge, Sun City Huntley also has another clubhouse in the form of Meadow View Lodge, a 20,000 square-foot facility with its own fitness center, aerobics and dance studio, and outdoor pool of its own.

Outdoors, Sun City Huntley provides countless attractions to explore. Over one-third of the land is protected open space and nature preserves. Wildflower Park is one such protected area that comes with miles of walking and biking trails and a 19-acre fishing lake. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the softball field, bocce ball courts, volleyball courts, and the prairie style golf course. No doubt, Sun City Huntley represents the best of the best when it comes to active adult communities.

2. Carillon

Mid $100s – High $300s

Located in Plainfield, Illinois, Carillon holds the distinction of being the first 55+ active adult community in the Chicago area. This gated community of nearly 2,100 homes includes over 30 different floor plans that come in the form of condos, coach homes, townhomes, and single-family homes.

Community events and activities take place at Club Carillon, a 32,000 square-foot facility that includes an indoor pool and spa, a fitness center, as well as an aerobics and dance studio. Many of the community’s events and parties take place in the ballroom, which comes with an elevated stage and dance floor.

Outside the community are two pools, including one reserved for residents and one that is grandchild-friendly. A three-mile walking and biking trail connect the sixteen neighborhoods of the community back to the clubhouse. And for golfers, a 27-hole public course is available with a fully stocked pro shop and a full-service restaurant, the perfect spot for a celebratory drink with friends after a day of hitting the links.

3. Carillon Lakes

Mid $100s – Low $300s

Carillon Lakes is located in Crest Hill and is a 55+ community of over 1,100 homes. Developed by Cambridge Homes, Carillon Lakes can choose from a variety of single-family homes and townhomes. Single-family homes range from 1,500 to 2,300 square feet and include at least two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a two-car attached garage. Townhomes, on the other hand, range from 1,107 to 1,693 square feet with each home offering one to two bedrooms, one to two bathrooms, and an attached two-car garage.

For entertainment, residents can check out the 18,000 square-foot clubhouse. Inside the clubhouse is an exercise room alongside an indoor pool and spa, an aerobics studio that offers dance classes, as well as yoga, pilates, and aerobics. Outside rests a large veranda that wraps around the back patio of the clubhouse with a sundeck and outdoor pool overlooking the lakes in the community. There are also tennis courts, bocce courts, walking and biking trails, as well as a small 3-hole, par-3 golf course that is free for all residents to use.

4. Carillon at Cambridge Lakes

Low $200s – Mid $300s

Next on the list is Carillon at Cambridge Lakes. Located in Pingree Grove and developed by D.R. Horton and Cambridge Homes, Carillon at Cambridge Lakes will be comprised of 943 single-family homes, townhomes, and duplexes, upon completion. Serving as the social hub of the community is the clubhouse, which comes with an exciting lineup of amenities to enjoy. For staying in shape, the fitness center, aerobics studio, and an indoor pool ensure residents will have no shortage of ways to exercise. The spa and outdoor pool are utilized for downtime and enjoying some beautiful weather. Also in the clubhouse are several hobbies and crafts rooms, a computer lab, and a library.

Besides the indoor fitness options, residents can also gather outside and compete with friends and neighbors over a friendly game of tennis or bocce. Walking and biking trails are also available.

5. Edgewater

Low $200s – Mid $400s

Edgewater by Del Webb is a highly acclaimed active adult community located in Chicago’s northwest suburbs. Featuring over 1,000 homes, Edgewater offers 22 single-family ranch floor plans that range from 1,197 to 3,100 square feet. All homes include partial brick fronts, as well as optional basements. Larger floor plans include features such as expansive great rooms, large spa-like bathrooms, and spacious closet areas.

The 23,000 square-foot clubhouse is the focal point of the community. Included inside is a large fitness center where residents will have access to high-end cardiovascular and weight training equipment, an indoor lap pool, as well as an aerobics and dance studio.

Edgewater also emphasizes a stimulating lifestyle, which is achieved thanks to the dozens of offered clubs. Past clubs have included everything from sport gathering clubs, dance groups, a cooking club, to even a travel club. And with a full-time lifestyle director ready to answer any questions, residents will have no problem finding the club best suited towards their interests.

6. Carillon at Stonegate

Mid $200s – High $300s

Carillon at Stonegate is an active adult community that is located in the Naperville-Aurora area. Featuring just 336 homes, Carillon at Stonegate provides a more intimate setting yet still maintains the amenities and perks of a large-scale community.

The community has nine single-family ranch floor plans that range from 1,402 to 2,332 square feet. All homes feature at least two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two-car garages. Some plans add further options, such as additional bedrooms, dens, and second stories with a loft. Regardless of the floor plan, each home offers an optional basement also.

The main attraction of Carillon at Stonegate is the 8,000 square-foot clubhouse. The facility is two stories and serves as the central meeting space for the community’s social clubs and activities. Inside, residents will find a fitness center, hobby and game rooms, a library, a computer lab, an aerobics studio, and a ballroom. Outdoors is the pool and patio area, as well as a tennis court, a bocce court, walking trails, and a small fishing pond,

Offering an abundance of clubs, residents at Carillon at Stonegate has dozens of options to choose from. Examples include game clubs, book clubs, and cycling to name just a few. In addition to clubs, there are daily excursions to numerous local destinations in the nearby suburbs or downtown Chicago.

7. Carillon Club

Mid $200s – High $500s

Located in the suburb of Naperville, Carillon Club is a prestigious active adult community of 778 homes. In total, there are 23 floor plans to choose from that range from single-family homes, townhomes, and condos. The 18,000 square-foot clubhouse features an exercise facility, aerobics room, a lap pool, and a spa. Outside are tennis courts, bocce courts, horseshoe pits, garden plots, as well as several walking and biking trails. There are also two separate pools, one at the clubhouse and a satellite pool for grandchildren.

Embracing a truly vibrant lifestyle, Carillon Club offers a full calendar of club meetings, neighborhood parties, and fun day trips. Clubs include a golf club, a wine tasting club, singles club, grandchildren club, and a Red Hat Society. There are many classes offered as well, including aerobics, yoga, pilates, and water exercises.

8. Grand Haven

Low $200s – High $200s

Grand Haven is a community that holds true to its name. Located in Romeoville, Grand Haven includes 677 single-family homes and townhomes, with the single-family homes ranging from 1,550 to 2,120 square feet and the townhomes ranging from 1,170 to 1,800 square feet of living space. Detached homes include features such as 42’’ cabinets, eating areas with bay windows, fireplaces, ceramic tile floors, and patios. Attached homes, meanwhile, feature dens with closets, sunrooms, extended kitchen cabinets, fireplaces, and private patios.

For recreational activities, residents can turn to the 15,000 square-foot clubhouse where they’ll find a large fitness center, as well as tennis courts and basketball courts. Also inside is a community library, a computer lab, a ceramic studio, and a large ballroom. Outdoors, more laid back activities like bocce ball and shuffleboard are available, while scenic walking paths are scattered throughout the community. Furthermore, a stunning lake sits right next to the community, perfect for recreational fishing.

9. Saddlebrook Farms

Below $100s – High $200s

Resting on 720-acres of land that includes lakes, nature preserves, picnic areas, and walking trails, Saddlebrook Farms is a community that boasts a serene atmosphere. Located in the village of Grayslake, Saddlebrook Farms provides over 2,000 new and resale homes. Homes are ranch style and feature front porches, allowing residents to easily meet their new friends and neighbors. Unlike most communities, Saddlebrook Farms is a land-lease community, meaning residents own their home but lease their land, resulting in a monthly association fee. Also of note: residents are only taxed for their home and not the actual land itself.

For entertainment, residents can explore the historic clubhouse, a 4,000 square-foot space that overlooks one of the many lakes found throughout the area, Residents can also spend their time enjoying activities like bocce and horseshoe, or simply enjoy peaceful walks and jogs throughout the community.

10. Grand Dominion

High $200s – High $500s 

Last but not least, there’s Grand Dominion, which holds the honor of being Del Webb’s first active adult community in Lake County. Nestled among large trees, rolling hills, and a 13-acre lake, Grand Dominion has attracted homebuyers with its peaceful setting and number of amenities.

Featuring 725 homes, Grand Dominion offers 22 single-family ranch style floor plans to choose from that range from 1,197 to nearly 3,000 square feet. All homes include a minimum of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two-car garages, though larger plans feature additional rooms. In many of the homes, residents will find unique features like expansive guest rooms, gourmet kitchens, and ample outdoor living space. Newer floor plans also provide loft options for additional space as well.

A state-of-the-art 17,500 square-foot clubhouse stands at the heart of the community. Upon entering the grand foyer and entrance lobby residents are greeted with beautiful vaulted ceilings and a towering two-sided fireplace. From there, residents can choose a number of ways to spend their free time. A fitness center features the latest cardiovascular and weight training equipment while the indoor lap pool and spa area are perfect for taking things a tad easier.

Just outside the clubhouse are even more amenities to check out. Tennis courts, bocce courts, and an outdoor pool with a sundeck and patio are just some options. Golfers can become members at two adjoining golf courses.
