Overview

Paso-Robles is a city on California’s Central Coast, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Its coastal location and sunny weather make it a favorable place to retire. The city is known for its wine growing and hot springs. Aside from that, the city is home to plenty of greenspaces and a downtown with many annual wine festivals and parades. 

Climate and Geography

Similar to most of California, in Paso-Robles, summers are sunny, while winters are short, rarely experiencing snow and freezing temperatures. Residents of Paso-Robles can expect to see over 200 sunny days a year. 

Paso-Robles is built on diverse land, contrasting between hills, flat lands, and mountains. It is also populated by river bottoms and plenty of greenspaces, mostly due to the famous vineyards around the city. 

Recreation, Culture & Entertainment

Paso-Robles is a famous wine growing region of California. This means that there is an abundance of wineries and vineyards open for tours and wine shopping all around. Some of the more popular wineries include Sculpterra Winery and Garden, Calcareous Vineyard, Eberle Winery, Niner Wine Estates, and many more. 

Over the year, Paso-Robles also hosts many food and wine festivals so that residents can experience different food and shops that the city has to offer. 

There are a number of museums and art galleries in the city as well. With so much open land, Paso-Robles also has many waterparks, beaches, and state parks for residents to explore. For residents looking for a place to relax, they can visit some of the hot springs, which offer spa treatment, skin care, and more. 

Cost of Living & Taxes

Paso-Robles, like most of California, has a generally higher cost of living than the national average but less than the state average. The median home cost is significantly higher than the national average but still less when compared statewide. Other categories such as utilities and groceries are higher than the national average but the cost for transportation is less. 

California does not tax Social Security income or retirement benefits. Also, there are some tax exemptions for residents 65 and older. There is a statewide sales tax of 6 percent and Paso-Robles does add 1.75 percent onto that rate.
