Overview

Thornton is a small city located in both Adams and Weld counties in Colorado, within the Denver metropolitan area. Best known for the mountain scenery and exceptional recreation opportunities. Retirees that enjoy mountains and open spaces with a more moderate climate and access to big city amenities will surely appreciate Thornton.

Climate & Geography

The Denver metro area lies on the border of a humid continental and a cold semi-arid climate zone. Due to the close proximity to the Rocky Mountains, the weather can be unpredictable with sudden shifts in temperature and precipitation. Typically winters are mild to cold, while summers are hot and humid. Residents can expect less-than-average amounts of rainfall and more-than-average snowfall. The Denver area is considered one of the sunniest major cities in the U.S., receiving approximately 245 sunny days throughout each year.

The larger city of Denver is approximately 10 miles south, with the surrounding terrain being primarily suburban and residential neighborhoods. The South Platte River flows along the eastern border of the city, and there are smaller bodies of water and parks scattered around the city.

Recreation, Culture, & Entertainment

Active adults frequently take a stroll and bike ride through the various parks and trails while enjoying the scenic mountain backdrop. Shopping ranges from farmers markets to fashion outlets, and there are breweries, wineries, and local restaurants are scattered throughout the city.

The larger city of Denver is near enough for residents to take day trips and explore a wider variety of activities.

Cost of Living & Taxes

The cost of living in Thornton is just above the state average and well above the national average. This is primarily due to the high cost of homes, housing, and transportation, although grocery and utility costs are below average.

Colorado is quite tax friendly for retirees, with significant combined deductions for all forms of retirement income starting at age 55 and increasing at 65, which can mean that pensions, Social Security benefits, and retirement savings accounts may be mostly or entirely tax free. Military retirement benefits also abide by these regulations. Property taxes are fairly low, but there are exemption programs available for individuals who qualify based on home value, age, and years of residence in the state.
