Located in Southeast Florida and part of the large and popular Broward County, Deerfield Beach is an affordable coastal town for active adults. With Florida’s tax-friendliness toward retirees, the city’s year-round warmth and sunshine, and boating and fishing opportunities, Deerfield Beach is a sought-after retirement destination just outside Miami.
Climate & Geography
Deerfield Beach is caught between a tropical rainforest and tropical monsoon climate, giving it hot, long, and humid summers. Late summer hosts frequent thunderstorms, and winters are pleasant, rarely reaching freezing temperatures. Though residents can expect more rainfall than average, there are still over 250 sunny days a year.
The Everglades are located to the west of the city, and the Atlantic Ocean borders the east. Though Deerfield Beach has experienced some expansion, both of these natural geographical boundaries prevent much outward growth.
Recreation, Culture, & Entertainment
Much of Deerfield Beach’s entertainment and recreation is based around outdoor activities. The Deerfield Beach Boardwalk is one of its most popular destinations, with a fishing pier and many nearby restaurants and bars. Residents can go boating on Deerfield Island Park, camping in Quiet Waters Park, and golfing at the Deer Creek Golf Club and Southwinds Golf Course. The Deerfield Beach Arboretum also offers peaceful nature walks.
Residents seeking shopping can head to nearby Boca Raton, which has plentiful name-brand and high-end shopping centers.
Cost of Living & Taxes
Though the cost of living in Deerfield Beach is slightly higher than the national average, this is entirely because transportation is much higher. In contrast, housing is much more affordable and well below average for Florida, as are health care and utilities. Residents can expect groceries to cost the same as the U.S. average.
Florida is a popular destination for retirees because it has no income tax, as well as very low property taxes. Deerfield Beach has a 7 percent sales tax, near the average for the country, but groceries and medication are exempt.
The Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area consistently scores well on Gallup’s Well-Being Index. Most recently, it was in the top 20 communities in the U.S.

Very close to Deerfield, Boca Raton Regional Hospital is also ranked as high performing and the No. 8 hospital in the Miami area. Within 10 miles are three more high performing hospitals: Northwest Medical Center-Margate, Delray Medical Center, and Holy Cross Hospital-Fort Lauderdale.
