Overview
Lansdowne is a small city in the Washington D.C. area of Virginia, located right on the border separating Virginia and Maryland. Its quiet location and natural areas have made it a desirable location for retirees who want a quaint community but still live near a bigger city.
Climate and Geography
A rural city of Virginia, Lansdowne is located southeast of Leesburg, and northwest of Washington D.C. Summers are hot and muggy, and winters are cold and snowy, with partly cloudy skies year round.
The city itself is built mostly on prairieland, and resides right on the sideline of the Potomac River near many of small bodies of water and scenery.
Recreation, Culture & Entertainment
Residents of Lansdowne enjoy exploring the greenspaces in the city, including a number of golf courses. Some of the most popular courses are The Golf Club at Lansdowne, MoskalGolf, and TopGolf. For those interested in what a bigger city has to offer, Washington D.C is only an hour away.
Just outside Lansdowne are even more attractive parks such as Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park and Bles Park. These are common places for sightseeing and taking a tour through the hiking and biking trails.
Lansdowne is home to a number of hotels and resorts, as well as some fine dining around the city.
Cost of Living & Taxes
The cost of living in Lansdowne is significantly higher than the state and national averages. This can be due to the housing cost, which is higher than the national average. Other categories such as groceries and transportation costs are higher than the national average, while the cost for utilities are lower.
Virginia is a tax-friendly state. There is no tax on Social Security benefits and residents 65 and older qualify for several tax breaks, especially for homeowners. Also, retirement income is exempt from taxes as well.
The sales tax rate for most areas in Virginia is 5.3%. In all of Virginia, grocery items and essential personal hygiene items are taxed at a reduced rate of 2.5%.
Health Care
Virginia ranks among some of the top states in Gallup’s Well-Being Index.
Lansdowne is home to three hospitals and medical centers. They are Inova Loudon Hospital and Reston Hospital Center, both ranked high performing in one procedure by U.S. News, and Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Virginia.
