Rock Hill is located along the Catawba River, just south of the city of Charlotte. The suburb enjoys hot and humid summers while winters are mild and wet. Residents of Rock Hill can expect to see about 200 sunny days a year. Located along the Catawba River and near Lake Wylie, residents have easy access to water recreation and scenic views.

Rock Hill is known for its historic downtown and close-knit neighborly feel. Those looking to get outside in Rock Hill have plenty of options to do so, including nearby state and local parks, as well as nature trails outside the city and along the riverfront.

Locals love to explore the city’s many museums, including Museum of York County, Rock Hill Fire Station Museum, and Rock Hill Aquatics Center. The downtown area also offers many restaurants and shops. Not to mention, the city is home to a number of breweries and wineries for those that want to take a tour or grab a drink.

Cost of Living & Taxes

Rock Hill, like most of South Carolina, has a generally lower cost of living than the national average. The median home and housing cost is less than that of the national and state averages. Other costs, such as groceries and transportation, are cheaper than the national average, but utilities are more expensive.

South Carolina does not have a tax on Social Security. Homeowners that are 65 and older qualify for a homestead exemption. South Carolina’s sales tax rate is 6 percent and Rock Hill adds a 1 percent onto that rate.

Health Care

There are four medical centers and hospitals in Rock Hill, two of these are ranked high performing in at least two procedures by U.S News. They are Piedmont Medical Center and Carolinas Healthcare System Pineville. Just outside the city is Carolinas Medical Center, which is nationally ranked and high performing in a number of procedures and conditions.
