    New Braunfels is a small city in Central Texas. Its warm weather and close proximity to the entertainment of San Antonio makes it a popular retirement destination. The city also boasts a vibrant downtown, historic landmarks, and farmers markets. 

    Climate and Geography

    New Braunfels is a rural city just outside of San Antonio. Summers are sunny and hot while winters are mild and short. Residents of New Braunfels can expect over 200 sunny days 34 inches of rain each year.

    The city is located where the Hill Country meets rolling prairie land, otherwise known as the Balcones Fault. The Comal Springs are along the fault line in New Braunfels.

    Recreation, Culture & Entertainment

    The city has plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Some of the most popular destinations include the Comal River, Canyon Lake, and New Braunfels Lake. Here, locals can fish, swim, boat, hike, or simply relax on the beach. 

    One of the most popular attractions of New Braunfels is the Historic District of Gruene. Gruene is home to a shopping and entertainment center where residents can find farmers markets, antique companies, barn pottery, and a number of other historic landmarks and venues. Other local favorites include Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo, New Braunfels League Art Gallery, and Stars and Stripes Drive-in Theatre.  

    More entertainment and recreation can be found in nearby San Antonio, located just over a half-hour away.

    Cost of Living & Taxes

    The cost of living in New Braunfels is higher than the state average. This is mainly because of higher housing costs. Other factors, like transportation and groceries, are below both the state and national averages. 

    Texas is a tax-friendly state for retirees. There is no tax on any retirement income, including Social Security benefits. The state also offers a homestead exemption to all homeowners to help with property taxes. New Braunfels has an 8.25 percent sales tax, which is higher than average. 

    Health Care 

    The San Antonio metro area ranks in the top 65 communities on Gallup's Well-Being Index.

    There are three hospitals and medical centers in New Braunfels. They are Post Acute-Warm Springs Specialty Hospital of New Braunfels, Resolute Health-New Braunfels, and Central Texas Medical Center. Just outside New Braunfels in San Antonio is Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, which is rated high performing by U.S News.
