The overall cost of living in the Indianapolis metro area is almost 10 percent lower than the national average. Housing is less expensive than the national average by about 24 percent, healthcare is close to national averages while groceries and utilities are about 6 percent less.

Indiana has a flat rate income tax of 3.23 percent and while Social Security is exempt other forms of retirement income are fully taxable. Individual counties may charge additional income tax. According to Kiplinger Indiana sales and property taxes are comparable to the rest of the nation.

Costs for active adult retirement communities can vary quite a bit but generally range from the high $200s to mid $600s. 

Indianapolis Area Climate and Geography

Central Indiana enjoys four distinct seasons giving everyone a chance to enjoy their favorite outdoor activities from summer camping trips to outdoor ice skating in the winter. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures averaging from a low of 65 degrees to a high of 81 degrees. It is not uncommon for many days to hit 90 degrees or more and the highest recorded temperature at the Indianapolis airport was 105 degrees in July of 2012. Winter temperatures range from 25 to 37 degrees with the record low being -27 degrees in 1994. Annual snowfall averages around 25 inches. Spring weather can be unpredictable with sudden temperature changes, frequent rain and a higher risk of tornadoes. 

Central Indiana is fairly flat land with some remaining deciduous forests although most of the area is now agricultural. There is a surprising diversity of wildlife in the Indianapolis metro and it has been named as one of the most wildlife-friendly cities by the National Wildlife Federation. Birdwatchers will be excited to learn that the rivers and creeks in the metro area are part of the Mississippi Flyway, which sees hundreds of migrating birds throughout the year.
