The overall cost of living in the Indianapolis metro area is almost 10 percent lower than the national average. Housing is less expensive than the national average by about 24 percent, healthcare is close to national averages while groceries and utilities are about 6 percent less.
Indiana has a flat rate income tax of 3.23 percent and while Social Security is exempt other forms of retirement income are fully taxable. Individual counties may charge additional income tax. According to Kiplinger Indiana sales and property taxes are comparable to the rest of the nation.

Indianapolis Area Climate and Geography

There is a surprising diversity of wildlife in the Indianapolis metro and it has been named as one of the most wildlife-friendly cities by the National Wildlife Federation. Birdwatchers will be excited to learn that the rivers and creeks in the metro area are part of the Mississippi Flyway, which sees hundreds of migrating birds throughout the year.
