    New Hope lies on the west bank of the Delaware River, which separates Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Its ideal location and historical appeal have made it an enticing option for retirees. Besides that, the city is home to a quaint downtown and plenty of nature spaces and landmarks, including forest preserves and waterfalls. 

    Climate and Geography

    A small city, New Hope is located in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania. Summers are warm and humid, and winters can be wet and cold. Residents of New Hope can expect more rain than the national average and about 200 sunny days a year. 

    The city is built on mostly low land and is surrounded by preserved forest and farmland. New Hope is located just an hour away from Philadelphia for those interested in visiting the big city. 

    Recreation, Culture, & Entertainment

    Residents of New Hope enjoy getting outside of the city and visiting some of the historical state parks and forest preserves. Some of these include Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, Washington Crossing Historic Park, and Bowman’s Hill Wildfire Preserve. Aside from these, there’s plenty of other scenery that residents can visit, including botanical gardens and public farms. 

    New Hope is also home to different art collections, including Sidetracks Art Gallery and James Michener Art Museum. There are many breweries and wineries that residents can visit, as well as a number of antique shops and restaurants.

    Locals of New Hope love going to farmers markets, and taking a trip out to Philadelphia where they can find even more amenities. 

    Cost of Living & Taxes

    The cost of living in New Hope is significantly higher than the state and national averages. This is due to the housing costs which are higher than the national averages. Utilities, transportation, and groceries are all higher than national averages as well. 

    Pennsylvania is one of the most tax-friendly states in the nation. Neither Social Security benefits nor retirement income are taxed. Residents 65 and older also qualify for several tax breaks, especially for homeowners and renters. The sales tax rate for Pennsylvania and New Hope is 6 percent. 

    Health Care 

    There are many hospitals and medical centers near New Hope. They are St. Mary Medical Center, Doylestown Hospital, and Hunterdon Medical Center. Each of these are ranked high performing in a number of procedures by U.S News, with Doylestown Hospital having the most at seven procedures.
