The Tampa area is full of ways to stay active, but what about the 55+ communities?

The Tampa Bay area invites physical activity from its residents and visitors. There’s so much golf, so many parks, and of course an entire bay leading to the Gulf of Mexico for swimming, sailing, and other fun water sports. Athletics are important here, too. Locals cheer on home teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Lightning, and at the college level – the University of South Florida Bulls. If you’re looking for a community that will help you stay fit and active socially as well as physically, check out some of these gems near the city of Tampa.

Heritage Springs - Trinity, FL

High $100s – Mid $300s

Trinity is just outside of Tampa, and Heritage Springs is an excellent choice for active adults who enjoy golf, walking, biking, and other forms of exercise. This gated 55+ community has 1,337 single-family and attached homes in six different models with two or three bedrooms. It’s close to Brooker Creek Preserve, which has hiking and equestrian trails as well as a nature center.

Within the community, residents can use the fitness center and the aerobics and dance studio for group exercise classes. Water aerobics and tai chi are popular, and in addition to the 18-hole championship golf course, there’s also a putting green and a driving range. Take a tap dance class or join the tennis club. Southshore Falls - Apollo Beach, FL

With 866 single-family and attached homes, this gated 55+ community is only a few miles from the beach and less than half an hour from Downtown Tampa and all its appealing activities. Duplexes, quads, and single families range from 1,363 square feet to 2,278 square feet.

Residents have access to the fitness center and all its equipment as well as the aerobics studio where Zumba, yoga, and meditation classes are held. There’s a club for people trying to get fit and a group that gets together for line dancing. On Top of the World - Clearwater, FL

Clearwater has some of the best beaches in the Tampa Bay area, and On Top of the World is one of the largest 55+ communities in the area. Nearly 5,000 condominiums in 96 buildings populate this neighborhood. Floor plans range between 850 and 1,750 square feet and have one or two bedrooms.

In terms of staying healthy, active adults have it all at On Top of the World. There’s a recreation center that includes a gym, a pool, an aerobics studio, locker rooms, and a stage for dance practice and performances. There are also 12 shuffleboard courts, four tennis courts, eight horseshoe pits, space for lawn bowling, and an 18-hole golf course. Clubs and classes include slimnastics, yoga, softball, tai chi, and ballroom dancing.

Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club - Dade City, FL

There are no age restrictions at the gated community of Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, but its lifestyle and amenity options are great for active adults. Choose a new or resale home in this family-friendly community just north of Tampa. There are 865 single-family homes and villas in sizes that range from two to four bedrooms.

Your goals of staying active can be met at the 30,000 square-foot clubhouse, where there is a state-of-the-art fitness center and a large pool. The community also has four Har-Tru tennis courts, a basketball court, two pickleball courts, and a 36-hole golf course. There’s even a separate 15-acre golf practice facility with a driving range and a putting green. Residents enjoy walking and biking paths, plenty of outdoor space, and scenic beauty. Dade City is close to the Withlacoochee State Forest, which provides lots of opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking, and boating.

Summertree - New Port Richey, FL

Below $100k – High $100s

Across the bay but close to Tampa is Summertree in New Port Richey. This established, gated community for residents 55+ makes it easy for residents to stay active. Amenities include a steam room and a sauna for relaxing after a workout in the exercise room, and an aerobics and dance studio where classes are held. With two outdoor pools, two tennis courts, and nine shuffleboard courts, it’s difficult to find a reason not to get some exercise.

Residents enjoy "aquacise," a walking club, co-ed fitness classes, a golf club, and a tennis club. There are 800 single-family homes and attached villas for resale at reasonable prices. Choose from six different models with three or four bedrooms and outdoor maintenance covered.
