Active adults in Chandler are near the city and plenty of scenic outdoor space.

Communities for the 55+ active adult in Chandler, Arizona tend to be on the more expensive side, but some of the best lowest-priced communities do offer homes in the $100s and low $200s.

Chandler is an independent city of about 250,000 people in the Phoenix area and some of its appeal is that it offers all the advantages of being a part of a large metropolitan district, while also giving an easy escape into the Arizona outdoors. It lies at the very southern edge of the urban area, and its southern boundary is marked by the undeveloped lands of the Gila River Indian Community.

Chandler's location means that it is only a 30-minute drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in one direction, and 10-15 minutes from Arizona's desert landscape in the other. It also has all the facilities that a city of 250,000 can provide.

Nevertheless, despite house prices being generally on the high side, there are some communities in Chandler which have some lower-priced housing available. All three are at the southern end of Chandler, with quick road access to outdoor activities in addition to the communities' own amenities.


Below $100k - Mid $200s

Sunbird is one block from the East Hunt Highway which marks the boundary between Chandler and the open lands of the Gila River Indian Community. It's a 20-minute drive from downtown Chandler, and about a 40-minute drive from downtown Phoenix and the international airport.

Sunbird is a gated community of smaller 1,631 single-family homes for the 55+ active adult. There are 20 different models ranging from 745 square feet through to 1,680 square feet. The smallest homes comprise one bedroom, one bathroom, and a one-car garage, while the largest offer two bedrooms plus a den, two bathrooms, and a two-and-a-half-car garage.

Because of the size of the development Sunbird provides numerous amenities. These include an 18-hole golf course, a 43,000 square-foot clubhouse, a fitness center, outdoor pool, and its own restaurant. There are a large number of social clubs, classes, and activities to participate in, from aerobics to yoga by way of various arts and crafts, card and board games, a book club, Bible study, travel, and tai chi.


High $100s - Low $300s

Springfield is also on the southern edge of Chandler, one block from the Gila River Indian Community where the Arizona desert landscape begins and the city abruptly ends. It's a 15-minute drive from downtown Chandler, and 30 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. 30 minutes in the other direction is the 10,000-acre San Tan Mountain Regional Park, popular for hiking and horseback riding.

Springfield is a 55+ gated community of 742 single-family homes. Floor plans start at 930 square feet through to 2,382 square feet, so they provide a wider range and larger homes than Sunbird, which is a five-minute drive away. Smaller homes here start in the low $200s.

Springfield's amenities include an 18-hole golf course, two outdoor pools, two tennis courts, a ballroom, restaurant, library, cinema, arts and crafts studios, and a fitness center. There are numerous social clubs and classes, covering most of the indoor and outdoor activities available at Springfield.


High $100s - High $300s

Solera is a gated community of 1,149 single-family homes for the 55+ active adult. It's directly off the East Hunt Highway on Chandler's southern boundary, with its entrance facing the flat, open lands of the Gila River Indian Community. On the horizon and a 25-minute drive away are the hiking and horseriding trails of the San Tan Mountain Regional Park. Downtown Chandler is twenty minutes away, and the international airport in Phoenix is a thirty-minute drive.

Solera has ten different floor plans starting at 1,151 square feet up to 2,421 square feet. All homes provide a minimum of two bedrooms two bathrooms, and a two-car garage. Larger homes have two or three bedrooms plus a den, two or three bathrooms, and a two-and-a-half- or three-car garage.

Amenities offered by Solera include two outdoor pools, four tennis courts, a library, a ballroom, a billiards room, arts and crafts studios, a fitness center, and an aerobics and dance studio. There are clubs for numerous activities, including ballroom and line dancing, various card and board games, a birding group, a book club, gardening, theater, travel, and most indoor and outdoor activities. Favorable rates are available at the 18-hole Lone Tree Golf Club public course, a five-minute drive from Solera.
