Autumn colors on shores of a body of water in Maryland

Living in Westminster means being away from the city, but not too far. It's also affordable.

Westminster, Maryland isn’t quite in Western Maryland, but it still offers a rural vibe in the west-central part of the state. Located west of Baltimore and north of Washington, D.C., the area includes scenic mountain vistas, small town charm, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

The active adult communities in the area are a good choice for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle and the Interstate 95 corridor and metro-area suburbs.

The greater Westminster area, which stretches from Thurmont to Reisterstown, includes six active adult communities. The homes here are generally more affordable than some age-restricted communities closer to the cities. Here are three of the best lowest-priced 55+ communities near Westminster.

JerMae Estates - Thurmont

Mid $200s - High $300s

JerMae Estates is an smaller age-restricted community in Thurmont. With just 108 single-family and attached homes, the neighborhood feels intimate but is just minutes from the historic main street and shopping centers.

The highlight of JerMae Estates is the 18-hole golf course at Maple Run. The par 72 course provides views of the Catoctin mountains and challenging play for golfers at all levels. The course also includes practice facilities, a pro shop, and snack bar.

For residents who love being outside but don’t golf, JerMae Estates provides amenities like walking and biking trails, plus plenty of natural space to enjoy the outdoors. Thurmont borders Catoctin Mountain Park, which also provides extensive hiking trails and birdwatching.

The attached homes at JerMae Estates start at 1,340 square feet with three bedrooms. However, they only make up about a quarter of the homes in the neighborhood. The remaining single-family homes tend to be larger with three or four bedrooms. Homes were built between 2003 and 2008 and are now offered for resale.

Albert Courts - Thurmont

High $100s - Low $200s

Albert Courts is another small age-restricted community in Thurmont. With just 100 attached and condominium homes, the community offers low-maintenance living in an intimate setting. Albert Courts is well-suited for those 55+ active adults who want to live in a quiet community.

The neighborhood is not gated and it does not have a clubhouse. Instead, the community offers a gazebo and parks. It is near plenty of natural space as well as the center of Thurmont.

Residents can enjoy walks and the gazebo’s view of the Catoctin mountains. Churches, restaurants, and shops line Thurmont’s main streets, while Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park both offer plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities.

The 1,400- to 2,100-square-foot condos and attached homes at Albert Courts offer two or three bedrooms and two to three-and-a-half bathrooms. Homes were built between 1991 and 2001 and are now offered for resale.
