    Marion is the county seat of Marion County in Central Ohio. It has a rich history dating back to 1822, and residents enjoy the many museums and historic sites throughout the city. Besides this, its affordable home costs and proximity to Columbus make it popular among active adults. 

    Climate and Geography

    The climate in Ohio is classified as humid continental, and Marion experiences all four seasons. There are, on average, 38 inches of rain, 23 inches of snow, and 175 sunny days per year. Summer temperatures can reach the mid 80s and winters can drop below 20 degrees. 

    The terrain is made up of gently rolling hills. The Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area is to the northwest and the Delaware State Park is to the south.

    Top outdoor attractions in Marion include the Marion Tallgrass Trail, Quarry Park, and Sawyer-Ludwig Park. 

    There are also several options for enjoying Marion’s history, including the Harding Home Presidential Site, Stengel True Museum, and Heritage Hall. Retirees also enjoy local antique shopping and catching a show at the Marion Palace Theater.

    For quick getaways, residents can visit Columbus, located about an hour away, or Dayton, two hours away.

    Cost of Living & Taxes

    The cost of living in Marion is significantly lower than the state and national averages because of the low costs of groceries, health care, housing, utilities, and transportation.

    Ohio does not tax Social Security benefits, military pensions, or Railroad Retirement benefits. All other forms of retirement income are taxed, but retirees may be eligible for a tax credit of up to $250. To help with high property taxes, Ohio offers a homestead exemption aimed at retirees over 65.

    OhioHealth Marion General Hospital is the only hospital in Marion. The closest hospitals that are rated high performing by U.S. News include OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, and OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.
