Climate & Geography

Rio Verde has a hot desert climate typical of the Phoenix metro area. Summers are long, hot, and dry while winters are mild. Though freezing temperatures overnight are possible, there is no snow. There is also very little precipitation throughout the year and 296 days of sun.

Recreation, Culture & Entertainment

Rio Verde was established as an active adult golfing community, and as a result, much of the recreation and entertainment in the city is related to golfing. There are golf clubs in each community, including two that are celebrity designed. There are also miles of hiking trails in the surrounding natural areas, as well as wildlife viewing at the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center.

Residents seeking larger city amenities can head under an hour to Scottsdale. Old Town Scottsdale has local eateries, weekly art walks, and small boutiques, including Scottsdale Fashion Square, the southwest’s largest retail destination. In addition, Phoenix is just an hour away by car.

Cost of Living & Taxes

Rio Verde’s cost of living is higher than the national average because of housing and transportation. Utilities and health care are also above average.

Though Arizona does not tax Social Security, it does tax all other forms of retirement income. Sales taxes are on the high end, and property taxes are lower than average with a property valuation freeze available.

Health Care

The Phoenix-Scottsdale metro area scores well on Gallup’s Well-Being index, ranking in the top 70 communities across the country.

Rio Verde has no hospitals, but there are two hospitals that are rated high performing by U.S. News in Scottsdale: HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center and HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix is nationally ranked.
