New England offers picturesque getaways year-round, but visitors particularly enjoy the beauty of the region’s changing fall foliage. This peak tourist season is a prime time to stay in a quaint bed and breakfast, or a charming country inn. There are also many areas where you can rent a home for an extended visit or find lodgings at a budget-friendly hotel.

 

1. White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire

When planning a fall foliage trip to New Hampshire, you won’t want to miss a drive down the 34-mile Kancamagus Highway, in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. This scenic byway spans the distance from Lincoln to North Conway. Hotels, inns, restaurants and shops are found throughout the area. Shoppers will also love searching for bargains at Settlers’ Green Outlet Stores in North Conway.

2. Stowe, Vermont

Fall tourists will find a wide range of shops, restaurants and local attractions in Stowe, Vermont, yet the village retains its tranquil charm. Winding roads, featuring picturesque farms and stunning mountain views, are the perfect setting to appreciate the fall foliage. There are also many unique ways to view the fall foliage, including carriage tours, gondola rides, kayaking, horseback riding, cycling, winery tours and zip line tours.

3. The Berkshire Mountains, Massachusetts

In Western Massachusetts, The Berkshires are known for their fall foliage and autumn festivals. This popular region includes several fabulous destinations. A scenic drive along Route 2 is ideal for fall foliage, while picturesque towns like Williamstown and Shelbourne Falls offer their own charming shops, restaurants and local attractions. Seasonal events include the Northern Berkshire Fall Foliage Festival and the FreshGrass Bluegrass Festival in North Adams.

4. Litchfield Hills, Connecticut

Visitors may feel like they stepped back in time when visiting Litchfield Hills, Connecticut. This old-fashioned town features just a few shops and restaurants, along with many well-maintained historic homes and gardens. Historic Inns and B&Bs provide a perfect retreat for a romantic weekend or an extended stay, while antique shops offer a wealth of interesting finds.

5. Mount Desert Island, Maine

Maine may be best known for its fresh lobster and rocky coastline, but this New England state also features spectacular fall foliage. This is particularly true on Mount Desert Island, which features popular destinations like Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and the quiet village of Northeast Harbor. These scenic areas may feel remote, but they offer many attractions including unique shops, fresh seafood and many outdoor recreations.
