Sign and streets of Downtown Chandler, Arizona

If you're looking for a 55+ community near Phoenix, Chandler might be a good option.

Chandler is one of the cities which make up the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, as do its neighboring cities of Mesa, Tempe, and Gilbert. Chandler has less of a big-city feel, however, at its southern border is the unspoiled desert land of the Gila River Indian Community. This means that a short drive in one direction brings you to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and in the other direction into the heart of the Sonoran Desert.

The population of Chandler is about 250,000, out of the almost 5 million that make up the Greater Phoenix area. The town was founded in 1912 and a number of historic buildings remain. The city is also noted for its many recreational areas, parks, gardens, aquatic centers, and museums.

The attractive climate is what brings many people to Central Arizona initially, and that is part of Chandler's appeal. There are roughly 300 sunny days a year, compared to about 200 for the U.S. as a whole. This is a big draw if you wish to enjoy the active adult lifestyle, and have an interest in such pursuits as hiking, tennis, golf, or pickleball.

Winters are mild, with average daily lows of 40 and 41 degrees, though there may be a few frosty nights and occasionally a light flurry of snow. From April to October the temperature seldom falls below 70 degrees, with a daily average of 92 degrees in July, the hottest month. This is an average figure, and residents have to be prepared for days when the temperature is over the 100 degree mark any time from June to September.

Chandler offers a choice of 55+ active adult communities of various sizes and in various price ranges.
