Choosing any new home can be exciting, and when home buyers are looking for low-maintenance, active adult communities, they are also often thinking about peace of mind and comfort. Sometimes that means looking for a gated community. In Maryland, gated communities vary in size, security, and available homes. Here are 5 popular gated communities in Maryland.

Leisure World® of Maryland – Silver Spring

Below $100k – Mid $500s

Leisure World is almost a town of its own with all of the amenities the community has to offer, including clubhouses with restaurants and theaters, a bank, two houses of worship, and a post office. But even with over 5,600 homes and with a population of 8,700, residents can feel secure in their homes and like that this little enclave outside Washington, D.C. is gated with 24-hour staffed gatehouses and all guests must be registered at the gate. Leisure World also offers homes that range from small condos to semi-detached houses.

Snowden Overlook – Columbia

Mid $200s – High $500s

Located centrally between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Snowden Overlook in Columbia, Maryland is a mid-sized active adult community with condos and townhomes. The homes are all located inside the gated community, which also features a clubhouse, fitness center, outdoor pool, walking and biking trails, and scenic ponds.

The Gatherings at Lyndwood – Elkridge

High $200s – High $300s

The Gatherings at Lyndwood is a condo-only active adult community with 216 homes, the most recent of which were completed in 2018. Located in Elkridge near Interstate 95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, the community provides an enclave for active adults with a clubhouse, fitness center, and heated outdoor pool, surrounded by the Timbers at Troy golf course. The whole community is not gated but has a security system at the entrance and the eight individual condo buildings have automatic locking doors in the lobbies and intercom systems.

The Gatherings at Forest Glen – Odenton

Mid $200s – Low $300s

The Gatherings at Forest Glen is another active adult community offering condos ranging in size from 1400 to 1900 square feet. This is one of two 55+ developments located within the larger planned community of Piney Orchard in Odenton, MD. Piney Orchard includes over 4,500 homes within a gated community, but the homes in Gatherings at Forest Glen include amenities for the residents 55 and over, living in the Gatherings.

Neighbors can enjoy a clubhouse, exercise room, and outdoor pool. In the community at large, residents can enjoy a nature preserve and walking trails, a marketplace with a variety of merchants, and more pools and fitness areas.

Cedar Ridge at Piney Orchard – Odenton

Low $200s – Low $300s

Also located within the gated planned community of Piney Orchard in Odenton is Cedar Ridge. The condos at Cedar Ridge are all the same model with two bedrooms with a den and two baths. Much like the Gatherings at Forest Glen, the homes within Cedar Ridge have their own amenities, including a clubhouse with catering kitchen, common area, and fitness room, plus an outdoor pool.
