The Courtyards at Windsor Woods in McDonald Pennsylvania

Looking for a new construction home near Pittsburgh? Check out these active adult communities.

In a recent article, Parade Magazine listed some of the healthiest places to live in America, and guess what? Pittsburgh made the top 10. With a few added examples, the main reasons for this designation include:

Access to Top Health Care

Rich Cultural Attractions

Top Education for Students of All Ages

Downtown Trails and Parks

The Steel City was given additional praise for its Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh Action Plan, which focuses on transportation, technology, and volunteering. Pittsburgh and its suburbs appeal to active adults and their families, and there are many vibrant communities here with both resale and new construction homes. For our purposes here, we'll focus on the latter.

Here are four communities offering new construction homes that are worthy of your consideration.

The Courtyards at Windsor Woods - McDonald, PA

Low $300s - Mid $400s

Located about half an hour west of downtown, The Courtyards at Windsor Woods will have 64 new and resale single-family homes when completed by Epcon Communities and Scarmazzi Homes. Though it's not age-restricted, this neighborhood caters to modern active adult living.

The property is easy to get to from I-90, and it's close to outdoor recreation areas like Boyce Mayview Park and Hickory Heights Golf Club. The nearest grocery store is about ten minutes away or you can drive 15 minutes east to the town of Bridgeville, where you’ll find restaurants, more grocery stores, shops, services, and a movie theater.

The six attached models range from 1,561 to 2,845 square feet with two to three bedrooms, two to three bathrooms, and attached two-and-a-half car garages. Options include whirlpool tubs, quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, and covered porches. The monthly homeowners’ association (HOA) fee includes snow removal and lawn mowing. Homeowners can also enjoy the private clubhouse, which has a pool, gathering rooms, and a fitness center.

This second Traditions of America 55+ community is closer to Pittsburgh, about 13 miles away, in Sewickley. This friendly village borders the Ohio River, and it has a nice variety of restaurants, shops, services, and medical offices; the local hospital here is Heritage Valley Sewickley.

The five attached models are sized from 1,261 to 1,643 square feet with two to three bedrooms, two to three bathrooms, first-floor master suites, and oversized two-car garages. Options include sunrooms, fireplaces, porches, and second floors with additional bedrooms.

Our second Pittsburgh area neighborhood built by Epcon Communities is in the town of Harmony, 40 miles north of the city and close to I-79. Scenic Ridge is just a few minutes from Strawberry Ridge Golf Course and the charming hamlet of Zelienpole, which has a community park and a mix of old-fashioned and modern stores.

Upon completion, Scenic Ridge will have 80 new attached and single-family homes. It doesn't have age restrictions, but there's an HOA with monthly fees to provide for snow removal and yard work.

The two attached models have 1,718 or 1,816 square feet with two or three bedrooms, two bathrooms, gourmet kitchens, and two-car garages. The six single-family models range from 1,519 to 2,930 square feet with two or three bedrooms, two or three bathrooms, two-car garages, and similar features to the attached models.
