Though Encanterra allows residents of all ages, the community is designed with features that are sure to appeal to those aged 55 or older.

Despite the current recession and depressed housing market, there are several 55+ communities that continue to be a hit with active adult homebuyers in Arizona. If you are thinking of moving to this popular retirement state, here are seven communities worth considering.

1. Sun City Festival — Buckeye

Built by Del Webb, Sun City Festival is situated at the base of the White Tank Mountains in the northwest valley of Phoenix. There are plenty of activities and amenities available at this resort-style community. The Sage Center, a 31,000-square-foot clubhouse, contains community features such as a state-of-the-art fitness center, a range of hobby and game rooms, and several outdoor recreations, including an 18-hole championship golf course.

2. Mission Royale — Casa Grande

With an 18-hole golf course and a spacious, amenity-rich clubhouse, Mission Royale is another well-rounded yet affordable choice for active adults. This popular development is built by Meritage Homes and, upon completion, will include just under 1,300 single-family homes. The community also has many social clubs which will attract residents with a variety of interests.

3. SaddleBrooke Ranch — Oracle

Though SaddleBrooke Ranch has many exciting features, its new clubhouse is clearly the center of the community. This 37,000-square-foot clubhouse, La Hacienda Club, opened at the end of 2010 and is one of the more impressive clubhouses in the state. Potential residents will find all of the amenities commonly found at resort-style active adult communities as well as a wide range of social clubs and activities.

4. Province — Maricopa

In 2006, the National Association of Home Builders voted Province the best active adult community in the United States, and it's easy to see why. This beautiful community has many amenities which are mainly centered in the spacious clubhouse. Upon completion, Province will offer 2,217 single-family homes in a range of sizes and prices. There are also 50 acres of lakes and 125 acres of parks and natural spaces.

5. Trilogy at Vistancia — Peoria

Featuring nearly 2,500 single-family homes, Trilogy at Vistancia is a popular golf course community with award-winning amenities and features. The development is designed by Shea Homes for upscale, luxurious living, but there are homes that will meet many different budgets. In addition to the traditional resort-style amenities, Trilogy at Vistancia offers extras like an on-site Center for Higher Learning and The Alvea Spa.

Quail Creek, built by Robson Communities, is a mid-sized community which has been designed for 4,000 single-family homes.
