Though many people look to coastal areas like Florida and California for retirement destinations, Northern Illinois has a surprising number of impressive active adult communities. These developments are spread throughout the Chicago area, including several active adult communities near the popular city of Naperville.
What's Naperville Like?
Naperville is one of Illinois’ largest cities, following Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, and Joliet. Though the city began as a picturesque farming town, it has since grown to feature several corporate headquarters, colleges, medical facilities, and cultural attractions.
A variety of restaurants and retail centers offer residents many conveniences close to home. In fact, Naperville has appeared on Money Magazine's Best Places to Live list several times, climbing as high as number two in 2006 and number three in 2005 and 2008.
The city of Naperville lies 30 miles west of Chicago and the shores of Lake Michigan. It is less than 30 miles from the nearby shopping mecca of Schaumburg, home to the famous Woodfield Mall. Other surrounding communities include Plainfield, Bolingbrook, Lisle, Wheaton, Warrenville, and Woodridge.
The climate in Northern Illinois is good for active adults who prefer to experience all four seasons. Summers are warm and sunny, with daytime temperatures often rising to the high 80s or low 90s. Spring offers mild weather and autumns are crisp and cool with colorful fall foliage. Winters in Naperville are cold and snowy with January average lows falling to around 15.
Located within the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor, Naperville is home to many corporate employers. Some of the big name businesses in town include Alcatel-Lucent, Amoco Research Laboratories, ConAgra Grocery, OfficeMax, Tellabs and Kraft Foods.
This helps provide a stable economy with many diverse jobs. The city’s various retail centers feature many options such as Freedom Commons, Springbrook Prairie Pavilion and the shops and restaurants in Downtown Naperville.
The Naperville Historic District, found in the older eastern section of the city, features hundreds of historical buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to Naperville can visit the city’s Moser Tower and Millennium Carillon.
Moser Tower is a bell tower specially designed to hold the Millennium Carillon. With 72 bells, this structure is designated as a Grand Carillon and is one of four in the world with a range of six octaves. The bells are operational and tours are available after concerts. Moser Tower’s observation deck is 14 stories high, offering visitors a gorgeous view of the surrounding area.
