While the Sunshine State may be better known for its beaches and its theme parks, the climate and the soil has made several varieties of muscadine wine possible. Active adults who love wine have yet another reason to relocate to Florida: wineries. As luck would have it, some of the most interesting 55+ communities are near Florida’s wine country.

Palm Grove in Fort Pierce offers affordable living for active adults looking for a home in desirable Port Lucie County. The gated 55+ community has 365 single-family homes in two and three-bedroom models. It’s a scenic environment with plenty of walking trails, parks, natural space, and outdoor amenities such as shuffleboard and tennis. Clubs and activities are plentiful at Palm Grove, wine lovers will appreciate the wine and cheese tasting events frequently held in the clubhouse. Fort Pierce is home to the Summer Crush Vineyard & Winery, which has award-winning local wines available for tasting and purchase. There’s live music every Sunday, a packed event schedule that includes car shows and fundraisers, and of course the wines. Each blend has its own regionally relevant name like Marlin Monroe and Beach Nut.
Encore at Fishhawk Ranch - Lithia, FL
Residents living at Encore at Fishhawk Ranch enjoy wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, and holiday parties in their Oasis Lifestyle Club. They also have a catering kitchen and bar, pools, a fitness center, and access to a 25-mile nature trail that winds through the greater Fishhawk Ranch community. Construction by David Weekley Homes has been underway since 2016, and by the time this gated, 55+ community is finished, there will be 240 single-family homes in natural, scenic Lithia, which is about half an hour from Tampa. It’s also only a half hour from the Keel & Curley Winery in Plant City, one of the most well-known vineyards in the state. They are known for their blueberry wines, of which there are three different types to taste.
Century Village at Pembroke Pines - Pembroke Pines, FL
Low-maintenance condo living is available for active adults 55+ at Century Village at Pembroke Pines. Travel clubs, social clubs, and game nights keep residents busy in this community, comprised of mid-rise buildings that house 7,700 condo units from studios to two-bedroom spaces. There’s a fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, and 12 shuffleboard courts. Community Transit is also available, which is ideal since Pembroke Pines is equidistant to Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The Schnebly Redland Winery makes for an exciting trip for any wine lover and it is just under 50 miles away from this active adult community. The Schnebly Redland Winery has been rated one of the top 18 wineries in the United States by TripAdvisor-Niumba. It’s the southernmost winery in the country, and visitors can enjoy tours, tastings, and special menus in the restaurant. Using local fruits like avocado, coconut, and guava, the Schnebly Redland Winery provides tasty blends with interesting backstories.
Bridge Bay at Bannon Lakes in Saint Augustine, FL
Construction by Pulte Homes began in 2017 and continues today at Bridge Bay. Once complete, Bridge Bay will be a collection of 167 single-family and attached homes within the master-planned Bannon Lakes Community in Saint Augustine. With four golf courses and a long list of clubs, activities, and amenities, this gated 55+ community keeps its residents busy and social. Something is always happening at The Lodge, the Performing Arts Center, or the Resident Activities Center. It could be anything from a book group meeting, a scrabble game, or a watercolors class. Residents here live in one of the 3,452 single-family and attached homes that come in a variety of models. Timber Pines is just 15 miles from Strong Tower Vineyard & Winery, an elegant and understated establishment that prides itself on producing classics like pinots and blush wines. There’s also a Spring Hill Red; a muscadine that hits the spot when served chilled on a warm Florida afternoon.
