Why You Should Retire in Scottsdale, AZ

With its sunny weather, vibrant Old Town district, and access to outdoor recreation, Scottsdale provides an exceptional quality of life for active adults. It is located just about 25 minutes away from Phoenix, making it easy to travel to the city for quick trips. Residents love the fact that they can enjoy a vacation-like atmosphere year round while remaining close to top-notch healthcare facilities and cultural attractions.

All this is why Scottsdale was named as number three on 55places.com 20 Best Places to Retire in 2018 list. Below we’re exploring what else has made Scottsdale one of the most popular destinations to retire in the Southwest.

Access to Unbeatable Shopping, Entertainment, and Golf

With a population of well over 200,000 people, Scottsdale is a lively city that offers plenty of shopping and entertainment options that appeal to active adults. The area is home to over 2,500 malls and retailers. One of the most notable malls is Scottsdale Fashion Square, which is the largest shopping destination in the Southwest. It is consistently ranked as one of the top malls in the entire country and is a favorite for those who prefer high-end shopping. From independent boutiques to luxury retailers, there is no shortage of shopping opportunities in Scottsdale.

Scottsdale’s Old Town area is where locals and tourists head for culture, entertainment, and nightlife. This area encompasses the city’s historic core, and it includes an eclectic mix of cafes, eateries, high-end condos, and nightclubs. There are also a number of art galleries to explore in the area, as well as the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.

Golf lovers will feel right at home in Scottsdale, which is one of the top golf destinations in the Southwest. From luxurious championship courses to affordable options for playing casual games, Scottsdale has over 200 golf courses to choose from.

Close to Outdoor Recreation

For Scottsdale residents who prefer the outdoors, they don’t have to travel far to enjoy all that the Southwest has to offer. The city is nestled along the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert, which happens to be one of the most ecologically diverse regions on earth. Not many cities offer such an abundance of outdoor activities and access to wildlife viewing. When residents of Scottsdale want to hit the trails they head to Camelback Mountain, which is a 10-minute drive away. While the climb is difficult, hikers are treated to beautiful views of the city and famous rock formations.

Pinnacle Peak Park is another popular hiking spot, especially for people seeking an easier trail. This moderate out-and-back trail in Scottsdale is about 3.5 miles long and features views of the surrounding Sonoran desert. There are also rock climbing routes and picnic areas. For backpacking trips and camping, Scottsdale residents often head to the Superstition Mountains and Lost Dutchman State Park. The Superstition Wilderness Area has a well-developed trail system and many campgrounds.

An Abundance of Active Adult Communities

With Scottsdale’s abundance of active adult communities, homebuyers have a wide range of options that are suitable for different budgets. For homebuyers seeking a high-end community, Terravita is a great option. This gated community has no age restrictions but has become a popular option for retirees seeking a luxurious, resort-like atmosphere.

Residents who own a home at this community are automatically members of the Terravita Country Club, which boasts 34,000 square feet of amenities. This social hub includes a number of dining options, a fitness studio, an outdoor resort-style pool, and it offers sweeping views of the desert landscape. With an additional golf membership, residents also have access to the community’s beautifully landscaped 18-hole golf course. There is an additional amenity center, called the Desert Pavilion, where residents regularly meet up for clubs and activities.

Homes at Terravita are priced between the low $400s to the low $1Ms. These single family homes are available in four different floor plans and range in size from 1,384 to 3,730 square feet.

Scottsdale Shadows is another popular community that is located right in the heart of the city. This community features resale homes so homebuyers can take advantage of lower prices. Scottsdale Shadows has no age restrictions, but it’s a great option for active adults who are seeking low-maintenance condos and great amenities. Scottsdale Shadows has three outdoor pools and a spa, walking and biking trails, scenic ponds, and a 9-hole golf course. There are also separate fitness centers for men and women.

This community has 838 condos priced between the high $100s to the high $200s. The condos range in size from 850 to 2,352 square feet, and many units have upgraded features, such as wood laminate floors and granite countertops.
